Jemima Digby

1848-1881

Jemima was born in Newbury, Berkshire, she was baptised on the 2^nd June 1848 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Chubb.

Jemima’s mother Elizabeth was baptised on the 9^th March 1815 at St Mary, Long Ditton, Surrey, the daughter of William (a Sawyer) and Jemima Chubb (nee Freeman) who were married on the 22^nd April 1810 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

In 1851 Jemima (2) was living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury with her mother Elizabeth (36), her grandfather William (66), recorded as a Milkman and a lodger.

The 1861 census records Jemima (12) living at 3 Raymond’s Almshouses, Newbury with her grandfather William (83), late a Sawyer and her mother Elizabeth (40), a Sempstress.

Jemima gave birth to a son, William James Chubb in 1868 in Newbury (later known as William James Digby).

She married William Digby in 1869 (marriage registered in Newbury).

(William Collins was born in Newbury, Berkshire, he was baptised on the 1^st October 1841 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the illegitimate son of Mary Ann Collins. (No father recorded). His mother married William Digby in 1870. From at least 1869 William was known as William Collins, William Collins Digby and William Digby)

In 1871 William Digby (29), a Fellmonger’s Labourer was recorded living in Wetherill’s Buildings, Newbury with Jemima (20) and William James (3).

The 1881 census records Jemima Digby (33) living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury with William (39), a Fellmonger’s Labourer, William James (14), an Errand Boy and her mother Elizabeth Chubb (67), a Marine Store Labourer.

Jemima died aged 32 on the 13^th July 1881, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15^th July.

William remarried (as William Collins Digby) in 1882, his 2^nd wife was Sarah King (nee Whiting, widow of David King)

The 1891 census records William (48), a Town Scavenger and Sarah (49) (surname recorded as Collins), living at Hampton Road, Newbury, Berkshire.

He was widowed again in 1894 Sarah died 52 on the 5^th November (as Sarah Collins), she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10^th November.

The 1901 census records William C Digby (58) as a Pauper/General Labourer in the Newbury Workhouse.

William Collins Digby died aged 60 on the 19^th February 1903 in the Newbury Workhouse, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23^rd February.
