Elizabeth was baptised on the 9th March 1815 at St Mary, Long Ditton, Surrey, the daughter of William (a Sawyer) and Jemima Chubb (nee Freeman) who were married on the 22nd April 1810 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Elizabeth’s known siblings were:

Thomas born 4th March 1811, baptised 24th March 1811 at All Saints, Kingston Upon Thames

William baptised 22nd November 1812 at St Mary, Long Ditton, Surrey

Joseph baptised in 1819 in Newbury

In 1841 Elizabeth’s parents William (55), a Shop Keeper, Jemima (55) and her brothers William (25), a Gardener and Joseph (20), a Shoemaker were living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Berkshire. (No record of Elizabeth in this census found)

Elizabeth’s mother Jemima died ages 58 in 1845, she was buried on the 10th February at St Nicolas Newbury.

Elizabeth had an illegitimate daughter born in 1848, she was baptised Jemima, on the 2nd June 1848 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

In 1851 Elizabeth (36) was living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury with her father William (66), a Milkman, her daughter Jemima (2) and a lodger.

The 1861 census records Elizabeth (40), as a Sempstress, living at 3 Raymond’s Almshouses, Newbury, with her daughter Jemima (12) and her father William (83), late a Sawyer.

Elizabeth’s father William died aged 82 in 1867, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th March.

In 1871 Elizabeth (61) was working as a Rag Sorter, she was living with her widowed sister-in-law Hannah Chubb (60), a Charwoman, at 13 Shaw’s Lane, Newbury.

The 1881 census records Elizabeth (67) as a Marine Store Labourer, living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury with her married daughter Jemima Digby (33,) her son-in-law William Digby (39), a Fellmonger’s Labourer and her nephew William James Digby (14), an Errand Boy.

Elizabeth’s daughter Jemima died aged 32 on the 13th July 1881, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th July.

The 1891 census records Elizabeth (77) living alone at 2 Elms Lea Cottages, Old Newtown Road, Newbury.

She died aged 78 on the 8th May 1891 in the Newbury Workhouse and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th May.
