Maria was baptised on the 4th October 1807 in Ludgershall, Wiltshire, the daughter of Joseph and Hannah Purdue (nee Parsons) who were married on the 20th October 1793 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Joseph and Hannah also had the following children:

Joseph baptised in 1794 in Newbury

Mary baptised in 1798 in Newbury

Hannah baptised in 1800 in Newbury

Sarah baptised 1803 in Newbury

George baptised 3rd January 1813 in Ludgershall, Wiltshire (father recorded as an Innholder)

 

Maria married Israel Tombs on the 29th March 1832 in Collingbourne Dulcis Wiltshire.

(Israel was born c1807 in Newbury Berkshire, the son of Israel and Elizabeth Tombs (nee Smith) who were married on the 2nd May 1793 at St Nicolas Church Newbury).

Maria and Israel had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

Henry Holloway born c1837 baptised either the 26th or 28th June 1837 (died aged 49 in 1887)

Edwin born 1840 baptised 8th April 1840 (died aged 58 in 1898, buried in the NRC on the 7th October)

George born 1846 baptised 17th May 1848 (died aged 23 in 1869, buried in the NRC on the 10th July)

Fred born 1849 baptised 16th January 1850 (died aged 22 in 1871, buried in the NRC on the 21st October)

Israel was recorded as a Dealer in 1841, 1871 and 1881, a Pork Butcher in 1851, and a Horse Dealer in 1861.

In 1841 Israel (30), Maria (30) and their sons Henry (3) and Edwin (1) were living in Victoria Place, Newbury.

The 1851 census records Israel (43), Maria (43), their sons George (4), Fred (1) and Hannah Purdue (86) (Maria’s mother, recorded as a visitor) living at 84 Northbrook Street, Newbury.

In 1861 Israel (53), Maria (53) and Fred (11) were living at 14 Carnarvon Terrace, Newbury

In 1871 Israel (63) was recorded living at 34 West Street, Newbury. Maria (63) was visiting a George Hutchins (49) and his family, in Church Street, Hurstbourne Tarrant, Hampshire.

The 1881 census records Israel and Maria living in West Street, Newbury. In late 1887 Israel and Maria moved to Kimber’s Almshouses, Newbury.

 

Israel died aged 81 on the 30th August 1889, he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd September.

Maria died on the 31st December 1889 she was buried with her husband on the 3rd January 1890.

(Maria’s MI records her age at death as 82 and her date of death as 31st December 1889. The GRO website, freebmd website and newspaper obituary records record he age at death as 81. Newbury Weekly News obituary records her date of death as 30th December 1889
