Israel Tombs

Israel was born in Newbury Berkshire, the son of Israel and Elizabeth Tombs (nee Smith) who were married on the 2^nd May 1793, at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Israel and Elizabeth also had the following children:

In the 1815 census of Newbury Israel (7) was recorded living in Toom’s Yard, on the west side of Bartholomew Street, Newbury with his parents Israel (46) and Elizabeth (46) and his siblings Ann (21), Sophia (11) and Henry (9). (Surname recorded as Toombs)

His father Israel died aged 63 in 1832 he was buried on the 17^th December at St Nicolas Newbury (According to his will he was a Mealman)

His mother Elizabeth died aged 77 in 1847, she was buried on the 17^th April at St Nicolas Newbury.

Israel married Maria Purdue on the 29^th March 1832 in Collingbourne Dulcis Wiltshire.

(Maria was baptised on the 4^th October 1807 in Ludgershall Wiltshire, the daughter of Joseph and Hannah Purdue (nee Parsons) who were married on the 20^th October 1793 at St Nicolas Church Newbury)

Israel and Maria had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury;

Henry Holloway bon c1837 baptised either the 26^th or 28^th June 1837 (died aged 49 in 1887)

Edwin born 1840 baptised 8^th April 1840 (died aged 58 in 1898, buried in the NRC on the 7^th October)

George born 1846 baptised 17^th May 1848 (died aged 23 in 1869, buried in the NRC on the 10^th July)

Fred born 1849 baptised 16^th January 1850 (died aged 22 in 1871, buried in the NRC on the 21^st October)

Israel was recorded as a Dealer in 1841, 1871 and 1881, a Pork Butcher in 1851, and a Horse Dealer in 1861.

In 1841 Israel (30), Maria (30) and their sons Henry (3) and Edwin (1) were living in Victoria Place, Newbury.

The 1851 census records Israel (43), Maria (43), their sons George (4), Fred (1) and Hannah Purdue (86) (Maria’s mother, recorded as a visitor) living at 84 Northbrook Street, Newbury.

In 1861 Israel (53), Maria (53) and Fred (11) were living at 14 Carnarvon Terrace, Newbury

In 1871 Israel (63) was recorded living at 34 West Street, Newbury. Maria (63) was visiting a George Hutchins (49) and his family, in Church Street, Hurstbourne Tarrant, Hampshire.

The 1881 census records Israel and Maria living in West Street, Newbury. In late 1887 Israel and Maria moved to Kimber’s Almshouses, Newbury.

Israel died aged 81 on the 30^th August 1889, he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3^rd September.

Maria died aged 81 on the 31^st December 1889 she was buried with her husband on the 3^rdJanuary 1890
