George Tombs

1846-1869

George was born in Newbury, Berkshire the son of Israel and Maria Tombs (nee Purdue) who were married on the 29^th March 1832 in Collingbourne Dulcis Wiltshire.

George’s father Israel was born in Newbury Berkshire, the son of Israel and Elizabeth Tombs (nee Smith) who were married on the 2^nd May 1793 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Israel died aged 81 on the 30^th August 1889, he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3^rd September.

His mother Maria was baptised on the 4^th October 1807 in Ludgershall Wiltshire, the daughter of Joseph and Hannah Purdue (nee Parsons) who were married on the 20^th October 1793 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Maria died aged 81 on the 31^st December 1889 she was buried with her husband on the 3^rd January 1890.

Israel and Maria also had the following children;

Henry Holloway born c1837 baptised either the 26^th or 28^th June 1837 (died aged 49 in 1887)

Edwin 1840 (died aged 58 in 1898, buried in the NRC on the 7^th October)

Fred 1849 (died aged 22 in 1871, buried in the NRC on the 21^st October)

George’s father Israel was recorded as a Dealer in 1841, 1871 and 1881, a Pork Butcher in 1851, and a Horse Dealer in 1861.

In 1841 Israel (30), Maria (30) and their sons Henry (3) and Edwin (1) were living in Victoria Place, Newbury.

The 1851 census records George (4) living at 84 Northbrook Street, Newbury with his parents Israel (43) and Maria (43), his brother Fred (1) and a visitor Hannah Purdue (86).

The 1861 census records George (11) as an Apprentice working for a Joseph R Cole (28), a Grocer, in Birmingham Warwickshire. (George’s surname mistakenly recorded as Soubs on ancestry)

George died aged 23 on the 9^th July 1869, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10^th July.
