John Alder
1809-1891
John, his parents, siblings and early life:
John was an Agricultural Labourer. He was born on the 27th July 1809 in Newbury, Berkshire and was baptised on the same day, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of John and Charlotte Alder (nee Langton) who were married on the 17th June 1809 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
His father John was baptised in in 1788 in Lambourn, Berkshire, the son of William and Mary Alder (nee Dudly) who were married on the 10th October 1777 at St Michael & All Angels, Lambourn. John worked as a Labourer/Agricultural Labourer.
His mother Charlotte was baptised in 1786 in Newbury Berkshire, the daughter of John and Mary Langton.
Charlotte died aged 66 on Friday the 18th October 1861 and John died the following day, aged 76. They were buried together on Tuesday the 22nd October 1861 at St Mary, Greenham.
John and Charlotte also had the following children:
Mary Ann baptised 10th April 1814 at St Nicolas Newbury
Charles baptised 29th March 1817 at St Nicolas Newbury
Thomas baptised 26th November 1820 at St Mary Greenham
Sarah baptised 22nd December 1822 at St Mary Greenham
William baptised 5th November 1826 at St Mary Greenham
The 1815 census of Newbury records John (6) living with his parents John (30) and Charlotte (29) and his sister Mary Ann (2), in Quarrington’s Yard, on the east side of Mary Hill, Newbury.
John in later life:
John married Frances Rosier on the 1st November 1832 at St Mary, Thatcham, Berkshire.
(Frances Weight was baptised in 1796 in Kintbury, Berkshire the daughter of William and Elizabeth Weight. Frances Waite married George Dennis on the 10th October 1818 at St Mary Kintbury. The had two daughters, Harriet c1819 and Ann c1821. George died aged 25 in 1823, he was buried on the 25th April in KIntbury, Berkshire. Frances remarried on the 28th February 1824 at St Mary, Kintbury, her 2nd husband was Silvanus Rosier. They had a daughter, Maria baptised in 1825 in Inkpen, Berkshire. Silvanus died aged 41, he was buried on the 18th September 1830 at St Mary Speen).
John and Frances had a daughter Matilda, baptised in Newbury in 1832 and a son, Edwin baptised in Greenham in 1836.
In 1841 John (30), Fanny (35) and their son Edwin (5) were recorded living in Stroud Green, Thatcham, Berkshire
The 1851 census records John (44), Fanny (50), a Laundress, Fanny’s married daughter Maria Rawlins (25), Maria’s husband Henry Rawlins (27), a Blacksmith and their daughter Sarah Rawlins (2), living in Stroud Green.
Frances died aged 78 in 1869, she was buried on the 7th December at St Mary Greenham
The 1881 census records John (71) lodging with Henry and Maria Rawlins at Wards Cottages on the east side of Stroud Green, Newbury.
In 1891 John (82) was recorded as an inmate in the Newbury Workhouse.
John died aged 82 on the 18th April 1891, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd April.
