William Collins Digby
1841-1903
William Collins was born in Newbury, Berkshire, he was baptised on the 1st October 1841 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the illegitimate son of Mary Ann Collins. (No father recorded).
William’s mother Mary Ann was baptised on the 14th April1822 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of William (a Whitesmith) and Martha Collins.
In 1841 (before William was born) his mother Mary Collins (20) was living in Northbrook Street, Newbury, with Ann Cox (20), George Carpenter (30), and William Digby (40) both George and William were recorded as being in the Army.

In 1851 William Collins (9) was recorded living in Bartholomew’s Newbury, Berkshire with his mother Mary Collins (29) a Laundress and a lodger, William Digby (54) a Greenwich Pensioner. (Surname recorded as Digley on ancestry)
The 1861 census records Mary Collins (39), a Laundress and lodger, William Digby (66) a Chelsea Pensioner, living in The City, Newbury. (No record of William Collins/Digby found)
In 1869 William married (as William Digby) Jemima Chubb in 1869 (marriage registered in Newbury).
(Jemima Chub(b) was born in Newbury in 1848, she was baptised at St Nicols Church Newbury on the 2nd June 1848 the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Chubb. She had a son William James Chubb, born in 1868. After they were married William James Chubb was known as William James Digby)
William’s mother Mary Ann married William Digby (her lodger) in 1870 (marriage registered in the September quarter, in Newbury)
In 1871 William (78) and Mary Ann Digby (50) were again recorded living in The City, Newbury. William Digby (29), a Fellmonger’s Labourer was recorded living in Wetherill’s Buildings, Newbury with Jemima (20) and William James (3).
William Digby (39) was still working as A Fellmonger’s Labourer in 1881, he was living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury, with Jemima (33), William James (14), an Errand Boy and his mother-in-law Elizabeth Chubb (67), a Marine Store Labourer.
William was widowed in 1881, Jemima Digby died 32 on the 13th July, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th July 1881.
William remarried (as William Collins Digby) in 1882, his 2nd wife was Sarah King (nee Whiting, widow of David King)
The 1891 census records William (48) as a Town Scavenger and Sarah (49) (surname recorded as Collins), living at Hampton Road, Newbury, Berkshire.
Sarah died 52 on the 5th November 1894 (as Sarah Collins), she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th November.
The 1901 census records William C Digby (58) as a Pauper/General Labourer in the Newbury Workhouse.
William Collins Digby died aged 60 on the 19th February 1903 in the Newbury Workhouse,, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd February.
