Sarah was born in Thatcham, Berkshire, she was baptised on the 16th October 1842 in Thatcham, the daughter of John and Hannah Whiting (nee Alderidge/Aldridge) who were married on the 23rd April 1837 at St Mary’s Church Thatcham.

Her father John was baptised on the 18th September 1808 in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of Joseph and Sarah Whiting (nee Rowlan) who were married on the 20th December 1808 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (surname recorded as Whiteing). John died aged 73 in 1880, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd January.

Her mother Hannah was baptised in 1813 in Inkpen Berkshire, the daughter of William and Susan Alderidge (nee Curr) who were married in Inkpen in 1811 (Susan was recorded as Susanna). Hannah died aged 78 in 1896, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th April.

John and Hannah also had the following children:

Elizabeth born c1840 in Newbury

Susan born 1844 (died aged 1 in 1845, name at death recorded as Sussanna, buried at St Mary Thatcham on the 31st July as Susannah aged 11 months)

Rebecca born 1846 in Newbury

Thomas c1848 in Newbury

Mary Ann born 1853 in Newbury

In 1851 Sarah (8) was living in Shaw’s Lane, Newbury with her parents John (42) a Sugar Boiler (Sweet Maker), and Hannah (36) and her siblings Joseph (13), Henry (12), Elizabeth (10), Rebecca (5) and Thomas (3).

Sarah married David King in 1864 (marriage registered in Newbury)

They had the following children:

Frederick Henry 1867

Alice Maud 1871

The 1871 census records David (34) as a Labourer, living in The City, Newbury, with Sarah (29) and their two sons George (5) and Frederick (3).

David died aged 44 on the 18th October 1879, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st October.

The 1881 census records Sarah (39) as a Glove Maker, living in The City, Newbury with her three children George (15), a Blacksmith, Frederick (13) and Alice (9).

Sarah remarried in 1882, her 2nd husband was William Collins Digby (marriage registered in Newbury)

(William Collins was born in Newbury, Berkshire, he was baptised on the 1st October 1841 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the illegitimate son of Mary Ann Collins. (No father recorded). His mother married William Digby in 1870. From at least 1869 William was known as William Collins, William Collins Digby and William Digby. He married (as William Digby) Jemima Chubb and was widowed in 1881)

The 1891 census records William (48) as a Town Scavenger and Sarah (49) (surname recorded as Collins), living at Hampton Road, Newbury, Berkshire.

Sarah died 52 on the 5th November 1894 (as Sarah Collins), she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th November.

The 1901 census records William C Digby (58) as a Pauper/General Labourer in the Newbury Workhouse.

William Collins Digby died aged 60 in 1903 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd February.
