James was born in Donnington, Berkshire. He married Mary Preston on the 15th April 1820 at James the Less, Winterbourne, Berkshire.

Mary was baptised (as Molly) in 1790 at Shaw-cum-Donnington, Berkshire the daughter of William and Mary Preston.

 

James and Mary had the following children:

Mary Anne baptised 1820 in Winterbourne

Henry baptised22nd September 1822 at St Nicolas, Newbury (died aged 9 months, buried 6th May 1823 at St James the Less Winterbourne)

Ralph baptised 22nd February 1824 at St Nicolas, Newbury

Martha baptised 21st May 1826 at St Nicolas, Newbury

James baptised 9th March 1828 at St Nicolas, Newbury

Henry baptised 30th May 1830 at St Nicolas, Newbury

The 1841 census records James (50), a Publican, Mary (50), Mary (20), James (12) and Henry (10) living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury. (Trade directories 1839-1848 record James at the Greyhound, Bartholomew Street, Newbury)

In 1851 James (63) a Sawyer & Publican, Mary (61), their children Ralph (27), a Journeyman Painter, James (23), a Sawyer, Henry (21), a Journeyman Carpenter, their nephew Frederick Preston (21), a Millwright Journeyman and their niece Amelia Preston (16), a General Servant were recorded living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury (The Greyhound)

(The Greyhound changed hands in 1852, from James Allder to William Purdue. There is a record of a James Allder taking over The Plumbers Arms from an Elijah Oliver in 1856)

The 1861 census records James (72) as an Almsman/late Sawyer living in Child’s Almshouses, Newbury, with Mary (71).

James died aged 75 in 1863, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th January.

Mary died aged 80 in 1871, she was buried on the 31st March at St Andrew, Boxford as Molly Allder.
