1840-1891

John, his parents, siblings and early life:

John was born in Basildon, Berkshire, the son of John and Elizabeth Cooper (nee Champ) who were married on the 30th November 1835 in Hampstead Norris, Berkshire.

His father John was an Agricultural Labourer, he was born c1812 in Hampstead Norris Berkshire. He died aged 63 on the 23rd November 1877 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th November

His mother Elizabeth was born c1816 in West Hendred Berkshire. She died aged 76 on the 9th December 1891 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th December.

John and Elizabeth also had the following children (all five births registered in Newbury):

Thomas 1847 (died aged 13 in 1861, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th January)

Lucy 1852 (died in 1853, buried in the NRC on the 23rd March)

James 1854 (died in 1855, buried in the NRC on the 5th February)

Emma c1857

In 1841 John (30), Elizabeth (25) and John (5 months) were living in Greenham Street, Greenham Berkshire.

The 1851 census records John (10) living in Robeson Yard, Newbury with his father John (40), his mother Elizabeth (36), his sister Mary Ann (6) and his brother Thomas (3).

In 1861 John (20), a Carpenter was living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, with his parents and his two sisters Mary Ann (17) and Emma (4).

John in later life:

John married Emma Perris (a widow) in 1862.

(Emma was born c1836 in Newbury the daughter of William and Susannah Bradley (nee Challis) who were married on the 16th June 1828 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. She married Peter Perris in 1856. They had two children, John born 1856 (died 1857) and Susan born 1858, (died 1858). Peter Perris died in 1861).

John and Emma had a daughter Sophia born in 1862.

Emma died aged 29 in 1866, she was buried on the 15th July at St Mary the Virgin Speen.

John remarried in 1867, his 2nd wife was Emily Adams (a widow).

Emily was born c1834 in Newbury, the daughter of Daniel and Frances Alway (nee Northway) who were married on the 27th December 1817 at St Mary Thatcham. Emily married Andrew Adams in 1854. They had three sons, Henry born 1855, David Robert born 1857 (died aged 1 in 1859, buried in the NRC on the 11th February) and William born 1862 (died aged 3 in 1865, buried in the NRC on the 31 March). Andrew Adams died aged 35 in 1864, he was buried in the NRC on the 19th August)

John and Emily had a son Thomas William born in 1867.

In 1871 John (30) was recorded as a Bricklayer’s Labourer, living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury with Emily (37), Sophia (7) and Thomas William (3).

John was widowed again in 1873, Emily died aged 40, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th June.

John married again in 1878. His 3rd wife was Martha Kewell (a widow).

(Martha was born c1844 in Chisbury, Wiltshire. She was baptised on the 17th March 1844 in Little Bedwyn, Wiltshire, the daughter of Henry and Anne Chandler (nee Baldwin) who were married on the 3rd February 1839 in Little Bedwyn. (Henry’s surname was recorded as Chandler alais Clifford on the marriage record). Martha married Robert Kewell in 1866. They had a son William born c1867, a son Joseph born c1869, (died aged 2 in 1871, buried on the 5th February at St Michael and All Angels Enborne) and a daughter Annie Elizabeth born 1871.Robert Kewell died aged 37 in 1873, he was buried on the 15th April at St Michael and All Angels Enborne) Martha also had a daughter Alice born in 1875.

John and Martha had a son Frederick William born in 1879.

The 1881 census records John (40) as a Labourer, he was again recorded living in Northcroft Lane. Also recorded in the household were Martha (38), Thomas William Cooper (13), Annie Kewell (7), Alice Kewell (5) and Frederick Cooper (17 months).

John died aged 53 on the 3rd April 1891, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th April.

In 1891 Martha (49) was working as a Laundress, she was recorded living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury with her stepson Thomas William Cooper (23) a Builder’s Labourer, her daughter Annie Kewell (19) A General Domestic Servant and her son Frederick Cooper (11).

The 1901 census records Martha (56) as a Retailer of Beer, (Own Account, At Home) at The Vine Inn, Bartholomew Street, Newbury. Two lodgers were recoded living with her, John Pope (63) a House Painter and a John Taylor (38) a Bricklayer’s Labourer.

Martha died aged 65 on the 29th June 1905 in the Workhouse Infirmary, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd July.
