Samuel Henry Freeman
1844-1920
Samuel Henry was born in Reading, Berkshire, he was baptised on the 13th October 1844 at St Giles Reading, the son of Samuel of Emma Freeman (nee Sharp) who were married on the 3rd October 1843 in Wolverton, Hampshire.
His father Samuel was a Millwright, he was born on the 18th April 1817 in Newbury Berkshire and was baptised on the 14th May at Northcroft Lane Meeting House, Newbury, (Baptist) the son of John and Sarah Freeman (nee May) who were married on the 31st August 1800 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
His mother Emma was born c1823 in Caversham, Oxfordshire, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Sharp (nee Griffiths) who were married on the 13th September 1819 at St Giles, Reading, Berkshire. ((Mary Elizabeth was recorded as Elizabeth on the marriage record).
Samuel and Emma also had the following children:

The 1851 census records Samuel Henry (6) living in Kings Road, Reading, Berkshire, with his father Samuel (33), his mother Emma (26), his sisters Mary Elizabeth (4) and Charlotte (11 months) and his aunt Charlotte Sharp (28).
The 1861 census records Samuel (16) as an Apprentice Boot Maker, living at Zinzan Street, Reading with Thomas Freeman (57), a Master Boot and Shoemaker and his family. (Thomas was possibly Samuel’s uncle)
By 1871 Samuel (26) was back living with his parents and siblings Louisa (15), Fanny (13), Caroline (11), Emily (9) and Charles (3) in West Mills, Newbury and was now working as a Millwright.

Samuel Henry married Mary Anna Quarrington in 1879 (marriage registered in Newbury)
(Mary Anna was born on the 11th December 1847, she was baptised on the 14th January 1848 at St Mary Speenhamland, the daughter of Richard and Jane Catherine Quarrington ((formerly Jolly, nee Jesser) who were married on the 12th May 1835 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire).

The 1881 census records Samuel Henry (36), Mary (31) and their son John (11 months), living in West Street, Newbury.
In 1891 the family were recorded living in West Mills, Newbury, as follows: Samuel H Freeman (47), Mary A Freeman (43), John Freeman (10), Frederick H Freeman (9), Samuel W Freeman (6) and Mary M Freeman (2).
The 1901 census records Samuel (56) (now self-employed), Mary (53), John (20), a Solicitor’s Law Clerk, Frederick (19) a Corn Merchant’s Clerk, Samuel (16) a Carpenter, Mary (12) a Scholar and a boarder Mary J Russell (74), living at 2 The Crescent, Shaw Road, Newbury.
In 1911 Samuel was again recorded living at 2 Shaw Crescent, Newbury. His daughter Mary Minnie (22) a Butcher’s Clerk, his married son Samuel William (26), a Carpenter, his daughter-in-law Martha Ann (25) and his granddaughters Winifred (3) and Mildred (4 months) were also recorded living in the household. His wife Mary (63) was recorded living with her widowed sister Ann Miriam Balding, in Melton Villa, London Road, Newbury.
Samuel Henry died aged 76 on the 24th December 1920 he was laid to rest on the 28th December in the Newtown Road Cemetery with his parents Samuel Freeman (buried 1906) and Emma Freeman (buried 1917), his brother John (buried 1879), his sister Charlotte Bryant (buried 1886) and his niece Fanny Louisa Wood (daughter of his sister Louisa, buried 1896). Also buried later in the family grave were Samuel’s widow Mary Anna (buried 1928) and his sister Caroline Offer (buried 1929)

The 1921 census records Mary living in Salcombe Road Newbury. She died aged 80 on the 29th March 1928 and was laid to rest on the 31st March.
