1859-1862

Charles (aka Ernest) was born in Newbury, (birth registered in the December quarter 1859) the son of James and Avis Tennant (nee Dore) who were married on the 11th February 1844 at St Laurance, Reading Berkshire.

James was a Shoemaker/Cordwainer. He was baptised on the 23rd July 1815 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the son of George (a Blacksmith) and Mary Tennant (nee King) who were married on the 24th December 1891 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Avis was baptised on the 20th May 1820 in Wickham and Hoe Benham, the daughter of Thomas (a Labourer) and Hannah Dore (nee Cruse) who were married on the 26th October 1815 in Wickham and Hoe Benham.

James and Avis also had the following children:

Priscilla 1845 (died aged 10 months in 1846)

 Hannah Maria 1847 (died aged 6 in 1853 buried in NRC on the 8th July)

Martha 1849

James 1853

James was living in Back Lane Newbury before he married, he continued living in Back Lane with his family until his death in 1861, he died aged 46 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th September.

Charles died aged 2 the following year he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st April 1862. (Recorded as Ernest in the NRC Company Accounts Book)

The 1871 census records Avis as a Shoe Binder, still living in Back Lane, only Mary Ann (26) and James (19) were still living at home with her.  By 1881 she had moved to Bedford Place, Newbury. James married in 1881 and by 1891 Avis was living with him and his family at Oddfellows’ Hall Caretaker House.

Avis died aged 73 in 1892 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd April.
