Daniel’s parents, siblings and early life:

Daniel was baptised on the 24th January 1791 at Bucklebury Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Sarah Alway (nee Clarke) who were married on the 27th October 1788 at St Mary Bucklebury.

Thomas and Sarah also had the following children:

Hester baptised 12th February 1789 Bucklebury

William Henry baptised 18th October 1793 in Bucklebury

Sarah baptised 25th December 1797 in Newbury (died aged 4 months, buried 27th March 1798 at St Nicolas Newbury)

Daniel’s mother Sarah died in 1798, she was buried on the 11th February at St Nicolas Newbury

His father Thomas remarried on the 27th June 1798. His 2nd wife was Mary Ann Gatehouse, a widow. They had a daughter Sarah, born c1803 in Newbury.

In 1815 Thomas (60), Mary Ann (52) (recorded as Miriam), William (21), Thomas (19) and Sarah (12) were recorded living at the Hatchet Inn, on the east side of Market Place, Newbury.

Daniel’s stepmother died aged 56 in 1820, she was buried (as Miriam) on the 24th January at St Nicolas Newbury. His father Thomas died aged 73, four years later. He was buried on the 20th February 1824 at St Nicolas Newbury.

Daniel’s later life:

Daniel was recorded as a Journeyman Carpenter in 1841, a Wheelwright in 1851, a Master Carpenter in 1861 and a Carpenter in 1871.

He married Frances Northway on the 27th December 1817 at St Mary Thatcham, Berkshire (both were single).

They had the following children:

Matilda baptised 3rd October 1819 at St Mary Thatcham

Sarah baptised 22nd July 1821 at St Mary Thatcham

Jesse baptised 14th December 1823 at St Mary (The Minster) Reading (surname mistakenly recorded as Holloway)

Henry baptised 7th June 1829 at St Mary (The Minster) Reading

Emily baptised 13th May 1832 at St Nicolas Newbury (surname mistakenly recorded as Holloway)

Mary Ann baptised 5th July 1835 at St Nicolas Newbury

In 1841 the family were living in Back Lane, Newbury. The 1851 and 1861 census records record Daniel and Frances living in St Mary’s Hill, Newbury.

In 1851 their daughters Mary Ann and Emily were recorded living with them.

In 1861 their married daughter Mary Dowling, her husband Charles Dowling, a Groom and their granddaughter Emily Dowling (1) were recorded living with them.

Frances died aged 75 in 1869, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th November.

The 1871 census again records Daniel living in St Mary’s Hill, Newbury. His grandson Henry Adams (14) (son of his daughter Emily) was recorded living with him.

Daniel died aged 84 on the 13th August 1873 at Northcroft Lane, Newbury (the home of his daughter Emily and her 2nd husband John Cooper), he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th August.
