Charles Hazell

1843-1893

Charles was born in Greenham, Berkshire, the son of Richard and Eliza Hazell (nee Pierce/Pearce) who were married in 1842 (marriage registered in Newbury).

He was recorded as a Sawyer in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census records and a Carman in the 1891 census.

His father Richard was an Agricultural Labourer. He was baptised on the 18th February 1821 at St Mary, Greenham, the son of William and Harriet Hazell (nee Whale) who were married on the 2nd January 1803 at St Mary Thatcham, Berkshire. Richard died aged 54 on the 14th March 1877 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th March.

His mother Eliza was baptised in1826 in Ecchinswell, Hampshire, the daughter of Henry and Martha Pierce (nee Lawrance) who were married on the 17th January 1820 at St Mary Thatcham. Eliza died aged 35 in 1861 and was buried on the 14th February at St Mary Greenham.

In 1851 Charles (7) was living in Greenham Common with his parents Richard (27) and Eliza (25), his sister Ellen (3) and his bother Joshua (11 months).

In 1861 Charles (17) was lodging in Duke Street, Kingsclere, Hampshire

Charles married Elizabeth Chivers in 1865 (marriage registered in Newbury) No children found for this couple. *** see below.

(Elizabeth was baptised on the 12th October 1828 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of David and Mary Chivers (nee Jones) who were married on the 22nd October 1826 at St Nicolas Church Newbury)

The 1871 census records Charles (27) lodging at the College Arms, Pamber End, Hampshire. Elizabeth (41) was recorded living at 3 Mayors Lane, Newbury. Also recorded living with her were her two nieces Louisa Boyer (6) and Ada Boyer (4).

In 1881 Charles (37) was living in Greenham Fields, Greenham with his wife Elizabeth (50) a Laundress and a son David C Hazell (7)***

The 1891 census records Charles (47) living at Cromwell Cottage, Greenham, Berkshire with Elizabeth (62) and their son David Hazell (17)*** an Assistant Carman.

(No birth registration found for David C Hazell born c1874. There is however a birth registration for a David Charles Chivers, mother’s maiden name Berry in the March quarter 1874. Elizabeth’s brother David married Henrietta Berry in the June quarter 1874 in Newbury. David was in the Military. Henrietta and David do not appear in the 1881 census. There are these three overseas baptisms for their children: William John, 25th November 1875, Henry James, 7th March 1877 (both in Gibraltar) and Arthur Frederick George, 12th June 1881 (in Barbados) so the David C. Hazell recorded as Charles and Elizabeth’s son looks to be Elizabeth’s nephew David Charles Chivers.)

Charles died aged 50 on the 12th November 1893, he was laid to rest in a consecrated private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th November.
