Richard Hazell

c1821 -1877

Richard was an Agricultural Labourer. He was baptised on the 18^th February 1821 at St Mary, Greenham, the son of William and Harriet Hazell (nee Whale) who were married on the 2^nd January 1803 at St Mary Thatcham, Berkshire.

His father William was a Labourer in his early life, then later, a Publican/Beer Shop Keeper. He was born c1779 in Chaddleworth, Berkshire. William married Lucy Collins on the 5^th February 1798 in Peasemore, Berkshire. They had a son Benjamin, born 16^th November 1799, baptised at St Mary Greenham on the 24^th November 1799. Lucy died in 1800, she was buried on the 17^th October at St Mary Greenham. William died aged 76 in 1854 and was buried on the 18^th January at St Mary Greenham.

His mother Harriet was born c1783 in Thatcham, Berkshire. She died aged 75 in 1858 and was buried on the 11^th September at St Mary Greenham.

Richard married Eliza Pearce in 1842 (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Eliza was born c1826 in Ecchinswell Hampshire)

They had the following three children:

Ellen born 1847

Joshua born 1850

The 1851 census records Richard (27) living in Greenham Common with Eliza (25), Charles (7), Ellen (3) and Joshua (11 months)

Eliza died aged 35 in 1861, she was buried on the 14^th February at St Mary Greenham.

The 1861 census records Richard (41) living in Greenham Common with his children Ellen (13) and Joshua (10). (Surname recorded as Cazzell on ancestry)

In 1871 Richard was lodging at the Borough Arms, Newbury. (Surname recorded as Karell on ancestry)

He died aged 54 on the 14^th March 1877 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17^th March.
