John was born c1860 in Lockinge near Wantage, Berkshire, the son of John and Amelia Quelch (nee Franklin) who were married in 1854 (marriage registered in Newbury).

John’s father was baptised 23rd 1823 in Oare, Berkshire, the son of James and Elizabeth Quelch (nee Ballard) who were married on the 1st February 1808 at St Bartholomew Oare Chapel Chieveley. He died aged 85 in 1908 (death registered in Newbury)

His mother Amelia was baptised on the 5th May 1833 in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire, the daughter of John and Leatitia Franklin (nee Brunsdon) who were married on the 22nd October 1823at St Mary Bucklebury, Berkshire. She died aged 62 in 1895 (death registered in Newbury)

John’s siblings were

John was recorded working as a Carter in 1881, a Farm Labourer in 891, a Gasworks Labourer in 1901 and a Labourer Gas Stoker in 1911

In 1861 John (1) was living in Skinner’s Green, Enborne, Berkshire with his father John (38), a Brick Burner, his mother Amelia (28) and his sisters Catherine Ann (7) and Emily (3).

The 1871 census records the family living at Shaw Fields, Thatcham. John’s father was working as an Agricultural Labourer.

In 1881 John (20) was lodging in Frilsham, Berkshire with a Henry Brind (32) and his family.

The 1891 census record John (31), living in Pelican Road, Newbury.

John married Caroline Ann Wheeler in 1893 (marriage registered in Newbury)

The 1901 census records John living at 4 Sunny Bank Terrace, King’s Road, Newbury with Caroline (recorded as Carrie) and his mother-in-law Emma Wheeler.

All three were again recorded living at 4 Sunny Bank Terrace in 1911, also recorded living with them were two cousins, May Tuckett (11) and Dorothy Tuckett (10).

John died aged 69 on the 18th December 1929, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st December.

Caroline died aged 82 on the 23rd October 1947, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th October.
