In 1871 Mary (28) was living with her brother Thomas Butcher in Talbot Road, Poulton Le Fylde. (No record of James in the census for this year, possibly at sea)

The 1881 census records Mary (38) as a Master Mariner’s Wife living at 9 Higher Lane, Walton on Hill, Lancashire. Also recorded in the household was her daughter Nellie (9) and a female domestic servant. (Again, no record found for James so probably at sea)

In 1891 James (48), Mary (48) and Nellie (19) were recorded living at 15 Melrose Terrace, Liscard, Cheshire.

The 1901 census records Mary (58) and Nellie (29), living at 22 Hydro Ave, West Kirby, Cheshire. (James again probably at sea as no record on him in the census for this year)

By 1911 James (68), a Retired Master Mariner, Mary (68) and Nellie (39) were living in Southcote, Enborne Road, Newbury, Berkshire

James died aged 69 on the 4th September 1911, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th September.
