                                    May Butler (1890 – 1976)

Stanley Webb Butler was born on 8 June 1890 at Sandleford the son of Albert Henry and Annie, nee Webb, Butler. He was recorded with his parents and two domestic servants at Sandleford Farm in the 1891 census, Albert was a farmer. Ten years later in the 1901 census Stanley was still living with his parents at Sandleford Farm along with his sister Kathleen aged 13 and a servant with Albert still recorded as a farmer.

He started attending St Bartolomew’s school in Newbury in January 1900. He left at Easter 1907 and the school register recorded he left to become a farmer.

In the 1911 census Stanley was still living with his parents and sister at Sandleford Farm and his occupation was recorded as working on the farm.

Stanley married May Cox in 1915 at St John the Evangelist in Upper Bristol Road, Weston in Bath. May Cox was born 6 May 1890, probably in Bath or Bristol. In the 1911 census she was recorded as a boarder in a boarding house at 8 Northbrook Street in Newbury and her occupation was draper’s assistant.  This would be behind or within what is now Camp Hopson.

In the 1915 electoral register Stanley was recorded as a lodger at Sandleford Farm House living in a furnished bedroom on the first floor and the landlord was Albert Henry Butler (his father).

Stanley died 28 March 1916 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 31 March 1916. He was recorded as living at Warren Farm in Newbury. He did not leave a will but administration of his estate was granted on 4 August 1916 at Oxford to his widow May. The value of the estate was £1,195 12s 10d.

On 4 October 1916 May had a son Stanley Douglas who was born at Sandleford.

May continued to live at Sandleford Farm for many years, she was sill recorded in the electoral registers at the farm in 1952. However, when the 1921 census was taken in June she was recorded with her son Stanley visiting her sister-in-law Kathleen Roberts and her family at 7 Dickenson Road in Hornsey.

In September 1939 when the National Register was compiled May was recorded at Sandleford Farm with her parents in law Albert Henry and Annie Butler, her son Stanley and her sister-in-law Kathleen Roberts and three of her children. May’s occupation was poultry woman.

May died 23 February 1976 while living at 41 Monks Lane in Newbury. She was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 26 March 1976. She left a will and probate was granted on 30 September 1976 at Oxford.

Stanley’s parents were also buried at Newtown Road Cemetery. His father Albert Henry was buried on 18 June 1940 and his mother Annie on 20 July 1949.
