John Tegg has a report of his death and inquest in the Newbury weekly news 3 September 1908

John Tegg was five foot 7 inches tall. He had Hazel eyes brown hair was of a fresh complexion and of stout build.

John Tegg was born at Hartshill Thatcham 1847.

He joined the then Newbury borough police in 1869 and transferred in 1875 to the new Berkshire Constabulary. With his job he moved around Berkshire and north Oxfordshire including villages such as long wittenham where his first wife is buried.

The couple had a total of nine children of whom seven reached adulthood. Or four sons three became soldiers and all children did well.

In 1886 he had a pay increase to 27s 5d weekly. He retired in 1897 and remarried in 1901. The couple became caretakers of the old metropolitan bank in cheap St.

John also acted as an auxiliary postman.

He died suddenly on a Saturday night of a heart attack with no warning of prior health problems. He was well liked and respected with a large number of friends and was particularly cheerful and sociable. He had acted as referee earlier the same day Saturday for the liberal Cricket Club.
