Susannah was baptised in Greenham Berkshire in 1789, the daughter of John and Mary Challis (nee Smith) who were married on the 30th October 1780 at St Mary Thatcham Berkshire (both were from Greenham and John was a widower)

John and Mary also had the following children baptised in Greenham:

William 1781/1782

Martha 1785 (surname recorded as Chalice)

Sarah 1787

Thomas 1792 (surname recorded as Chalice)

Richard Smith 1794

 

Susannah married Richard Howell on the 15th February 1820 at St John, Winchester, Hampshire.

Possible burial for Richard: aged 38, 5th July 1837, St Nicolas Newbury

Susannah was recorded in the City and County Directories as a Boot and Shoemaker in Jack of Newbury Yard from 1830-1852

In the 1841 census Susannah (50) was recorded as a Shoemaker living in Northbrook Street, Newbury.

The 1851 census records Susannah (60) as a widow, living in Jack Newbury Yard, Newbury. Her occupation was recorded as in the “Boot and Shoe Trade”.

In 1861 she was recorded aged 70, as an Almswoman, living at 6 Raymonds New Alms Houses, Newbury.

She died aged 72 in 1863 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th May.
