Emma Samuels (1876 – 1912)

                                   
Emma Samuels was born in 1876 in Greenham. Her parents were William Samuels and Lucy Ann Messenger who had married on 11 September 1869 at St John in Newbury.

Emma was recorded living with her parents and five siblings in Stroud Green in the 1881 census. Her father William was a railway labourer while Emma was a scholar.

In the 1891 census Ada was recorded as a visitor at 4 Woods Buildings in Greenham, also in the house were a married couple George and Fanny Cumming. Her parents and siblings were living at 1 Woods Buildings.

 Ten years later in the 1901 census Emma was living as a servant at 53 West Cromwell Road in Kensington and her occupation was domestic servant.

Emma had a daughter Violet Lindsay Samuels who was born in 1908 in Reading. Violet was baptized on 5 July 1908 at Greyfriars in Reading.

 A few years later in the 1911 census Emma was recorded at 31 Collingham Place in Kensington and was working as a cook domestic. Her daughter Violet was recorded with Emma’s parents and sister Ada at 7 Poplar Cottages, Jubilee Road in Newbury.

 Emma died in September 1912 aged 35 at 7 Poplar Cottages, Jubilee Road in Newbury (the home of her parents). Her death cert. gives pulmonary Phthisis and emaciation as cause of death.   She was buried on 4 September 1912 at Newtown Road Cemetery.

 Violet, daughter of Emma, died aged only 16 in Cowley Road in Oxford while living in Whitchurch in Oxfordshire. She was buried on 4 December 1924 at St Mary the Virgin in Whitchurch.

 Emma’s parents were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, her father William on 9 September 1921 and her mother Lucy Ann on 11 January 1924. Her sister Ada Samuels was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 29 December 1920.

Emma Samuels was the daughter of William and Lucy Ann Samuels. Her occupation was cook and domestic in London. She lived at 7 popular cottages jubilee Rd and died aged 35 in 1912
