John Howes
c1837-1912
John was a Gardener. He was baptised on the 26th June 1837 at St Leonard, Shoreditch, Hackney, Middlesex, the son of William Thomas and Mary Howes (nee Bantick) who were married on the 11th February 1834 at St Matthew, Bethnal Green London. William was recorded as a Labourer on John’s baptism record and the family were recorded living in Unicorn Street.
His father William Thomas was born c1810 in Hackney, Middlessex, the son of William Thomas Howes, a Fishmonger.
His mother Mary was baptised in 1804 in Haughley, Suffolk, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Bantick (nee Sadler) who were married in 1801 in Wetherden, Suffolk. She died in 1854 in the Fulham area.
The 1841 census records John (5) living in Unicorn Street with his parents and siblings William (6) and Mary Ann (1).
By 1851 John (14) was living in Garden Row, Fulham, Middlesex with his parents William (41) and Mary (46) and his siblings William (16), Robert (8) and Henry (6)
John married Eliza Vickers in 1860 (marriage registered in Newbury)
They had the following children:

In 1861 John (24) was lodging at 3 Stamford Cottages, Kensington Middlesex.
John, Eliza and their children were recorded living in Stroud Green in the 1871 and 1881 census records.
Their son John died aged 16 in 1888, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th September.
Eliza died aged 47 years 11 months on the 9th October 1888, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th October.
John continued to live in Stroud Green until his death.
In 1891 his son William Charles (23), a Grocer’s Assistant and his daughter Eliza (21) were living with him.
His daughter Eliza died aged 23 on the 1st January 1893, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th January.
By 1901 he as living alone. The 1911 census records John living at 2 Hillmans Cottages, Stroud Green. (Surname mistakenly recorded as House on ancestry)
John died aged 76 on the 10th March 1912 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th March.
