Samuel George Hunt
1850-1886
Samuel George was born in Speenhamland, Berkshire, the son of Josiah (a Wine Merchant) and Harriet Hunt (nee March) who were married in 1843 (marriage registered in Newbury).
Samuel’s father Josiah was baptised on the 26th April 1815 at St Mary De Crypt Gloucester, the son of Samuel (a Coachman) and Mary Ann Hunt. He died aged 55 in 1870 and was buried on the 11th July at St Mary the Virgin Shaw-cum-Donnington.
His mother Harriott was born on the 5th March1818 in Hammersmith London she was baptised on the 25th February 1824 (along with her sister Alice, born 10th September 1820) at St James Piccadilly, the daughter of James March and Mary Thatcher*****. Harriet died aged 40 in 1858 and was buried on the 15th October at St Mary Speenhamland.
***** James and Mary were not married at the time of Alice and Harriott’s baptisms. James was recorded as a Coachman “reputed father” on the baptism records. In 1841 James (55), Harriott (20) and Alice (20) were recorded living in Speenhamland, Berkshire. (Harriott was recorded as Barnett March and Alice was recorded as Alica Wright on ancestry)

In 1851 Samuel (6 months) was living in The Broadway, Speenhamland, Berkshire with his parents, his sisters Alice (4), Rosa (3) and two servants.
The 1861 census records Samuel (10) living in Speenhamland with his widowed father, his siblings Alice (14), Rosa (13), Harry (3) and two servants.
His father remarried in 1862, his 2nd wife was Lydia Leuinton (Lydia Lewington was born c1829 in Chilton Berkshire the daughter of Richard and Mary)
In 1871 Samuel (20) was recorded as a Wine Merchant, living Speenhamland with his widowed stepmother Lydia (42), his sister Rosa (23), his brother Harry (13) and a servant.
The 1881 census records Samuel (30) as a Wine and Spirit Merchant, living in the Broadway, Speenhamland. His stepmother Lydia (50) an Annuitant and a Servant were also recorded living with him.

(In the 1881 census Ellen Newman was recorded as the Hotel Keeper at the Jack Hotel Newbury)
Ellen died aged 33 on the 22nd June 1883 at the Jack Hotel, Newbury, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th June as Mary Ellen Hunt.

Samuel died aged 35 on the 25th January 1886 at the Jack Hotel, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th January.
