According to census records Mary Ellen (aka Ellen) Trask was born in either Merriott, Somerset (as recorded in the 1871 census) or Guernsey, Channel Islands (as recorded in the 1881 census).

In 1871 Ellen was recorded as Ellen Newman (23) the wife of Vincent Newman (36) a Victualler, living at 4 Luna Street, Chelsea, Middlesex. Also recorded in the household was Herbert A Newman (10) (Vincent’s son).

Vincent and Ellen never married.

(Vincent Newman was born c1835 in Highclere, Hampshire. He married Mary Ann Thake on the 7th March 1858 in St George Hanover Square London. They had at least three children together before 1871, Herbert Aubrey born c1861, Evelyn Rosinna born 22nd April 1863, (died 1864) and Victor Ashley born 1865, all births registered in Kensington. By 1871 they were living separately. Mary Ann (39) and her son Victor (5) were recorded in the 1871 census living at 33 South Street, Dorchester, Dorset).

Ellen and Vincent had the following children:
Ellen Trask Newman baptised 19th April 1873 in Alresford, mother recorded as Ellen

Rose Newman baptised 1st November 1873 in Alresford, mother recorded as Ellen

Vincent baptised on the 5th December 1874 in Alresford, mother recorded as Mary Ann (birth reg. records mother’s maiden name as Trask (mistakenly recorded as Frask)

Kate Newman baptised 22nd May 1876 in Romsey, mother recorded as Ellen

Henry baptised 17th February 1877 in Romsey, mother recorded as Ellen Mary

Vincent Newman died aged 45 in 1879 (death registered in Romsey)

In 1881 Ellen Newman (30), a widow, was recorded as a Hotel Keeper at the Jack of Newbury Hotel, Northbrook Street, Newbury, Berkshire. Ellen’s children Harry (4) (Henry)), Kate (5), Vincent (6) and Rose (7) were recorded as boarders at a school in Middlebridge Street, Romsey, Hampshire.

Ellen married in 1882.

Groom: Samuel George Hunt, aged 31, bachelor, occupation, Wine Merchant, abode, Bedford Hotel, Covent Garden.

Bride: Ellen Newman, aged 31, widow, abode, Newbury Berkshire

Fathers: Josiah Hunt, deceased, a Wine Merchant and Reginald Trask, a Farmer.

Ellen died aged 33 on the 22nd June 1883 at the Jack Hotel, Newbury, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th June as Mary Ellen Hunt.

Her husband Samuel remarried in 1884, his 2nd wife was Kate Stares (marriage registered in Newbury)

Samuel died aged 35 on the 25th January 1886, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th January.

HUNT Ellen        15th November      Administration of the Personal Estate of Ellen Hunt (wife of Samuel George Hunt) late of Newbury in the County of Berks who died 22nd June 1883 at Newbury was granted at Oxford to the said Samuel George Hunt of Newbury Hotel Keeper.      Personal Effects: £867 5s
