Elizabeth/Eliza Legg

1847-1874

Eliza, her parents, siblings and early life:

Eliza was born in 1847 in Brightwalton, Berkshire, the daughter of David and Maria Slade (nee Minchin) who were married in 1840 (marriage registered in Wantage).

Her father David was an Agricultural Labourer, born c1804 in Brightwalton, the son of Joseph and Ann Slade. He died aged 63 in 1867 (death registered in Wantage)

Her mother Maria was baptised on the 12^th November 1815 in South Stoke Oxfordshire, the daughter of William and Sarah Minchin. Maria remarried in 1871, Her 2^nd husband was James Jones. James died aged 77 in 1885. Maria Jones died aged 83 in 1899.

In 1851 Eliza (3) was living with her parents David (46), Maria (36), her half-sister Mary Minchin (11) and her sister Ann (9), in Brightwalton Village.

The 1861 census records Eliza (13) as a Domestic Servant, living in Upper Street, Bright Waltham. Eliza’s parents were recorded living separately, David (57) was recorded living in Bright Waltham.  Maria (46) was recorded as a Charwoman at the Swan Inn West Shefford Berkshire.

Eliza in later life:

Eliza married (as Elizabeth) in 1866.

William and Eliza had the following children:

Rosa Jane 1868 (died aged 13 in 1881, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31^st December)

Emily 1870 (died aged 3 in 1873, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28^th April)

Leah 1871

Kate 1872 (died aged 3 months in 1873, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18^th February)

In 1871 William (33) was working as a Corn Porter, living at 9 Lewis’s Buildings, Bartholomew Street, Newbury with his wife Eliza (23) and their children Ernest W (3), Rosa Jane (2) and Emily (11 months).

Elizabeth died aged 27 on the 10^th January 1874, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13^th January.

William remarried in 1876, his 2^nd wife was Mary King.

The 1881 census records William (43) as a General Labourer/Greenwich Pensioner, living in Ashdown Court, Newbury with Mary (38), Ernest William (13), Rosa Jane (12) and Leah (9).

In 1891 William (52) was recorded as a General Labourer, living in Percy Place, Bartholomew Street, Newbury with his wife Mary (47), daughter Leah (19) and Leah’s daughters Lucy (1) and Ada (3 months).

William was widowed for the 2^nd time in 1898, Mary died aged 60, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15^th June.

The 1901 census records William (62) as a Pauper/Naval Pensioner in the Newbury

Workhouse.

The 1911 census records William (73) as a Navy Pensioner (sailor) in the Newbury Workhouse.

He died in 1915 in the Workhouse and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7^th December. (Age at death recorded as 74).
