Helen (Ellen) New née Thorn 1832-1911 

Ellen (Helen) was born in July 1932, the eleventh child (third daughter) of Edmund and Elizabeth Thorn.

In 1841 they were living on Bartholomew St. Ellen had one sister and six brothers at home.

By 1851 they were living in Gibbs' Yard; Ellen, her parents and brother Joseph. She married John New in 1853 and by 1861 had two sons Charles and Edmond.

John was described on the 1861 census as a Cooper Journeyman and they were living at 4 Pleasant Place.

They were living on Old Road by 1871 and had a further six children (two more sons and four more daughters). Charles and Edward still at home, both labourers. John was with the police.


On 1881 census they had moved to Shrewsbury Terrace. Edmund was back at home along with three other children and two more sons. John was described as a Pedler, Edmund a French polisher and John (age 18) a framer (C&G).


1891 census. Walter, a labourer, and Daniel, a milkman, were both still at home with another son, Bertie born 1884. Also living with them in North Cottages, Newtown Road was a grandson, Willie Moos born 1886. John, aged 59, was described as a pensioner.


On 1901 census John and Ellen were living on Old Newtown Road, probably 1891 address had been renamed. John called a Police Pensioner. William Morse (16yrs) grandson- was still living with them and was a Draper Errand Boy. Another grandson(14yrs) Albert New was with them, he was a labourer.
John died in 1906 and on the 23rd April was buried in NRC. Entry in accounts book has him living at 9 Raymond's Alms Houses.

By 1911 Ellen had moved to 3 St. Mary's Alms Houses, Cheap Street and was living with her unmarried daughter Elizabeth (aged 39 yrs.)

Ellen died later the same year and was buried on 8th Sept. Burial record and in the accounts book.
