Elizabeth Nellis

1793-1871

Elizabeth was born on the 11th August 1793, she was baptised on the 18th September 1793 in St Marylebone, Middlesex, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Nellis (nee Brouncell) who were married on the 4th April 1790 in Marylebone, Middlesex.

John and Elizabeth also had the following children two children baptised in Marylebone, Ann baptised 10th April 1791 (died 1791, buried 2nd December 1791 in Marylebone) and Francis baptised 2nd May 1792.

Elizabeth’s mother died in 1795, she was buried on the 29th March in Marylebone, Middlesex.

Her father John died in 1808, he was buried on the 19th July in Marylebone, Middlesex.

In 1815 Elizabeth (21) was recorded as a Flower Painter, living in Winchcomb Place, on the east side of Northbrook Street, Newbury, with a Mary Gregory (46), a Miniature Painter.

The 1841 census records Elizabeth (50) (no occupation recorded) living in Union Place, Northwood, Hampshire, with a Sarah Rose (50), a Needlewoman, Ellen Rose (15), Sarah Rose (15), Martha Rose (15) and Laura Rose (14).

In 1851 she was recorded as a Drawing Mistress, living in Doe’s Buildings, Northbrook Street, Newbury, Berkshire.

The 1861 census records her aged 67, as a retired Drawing Mistress, she was still living in Doe’s Buildings.

Elizabeth died aged 77 on the 14th March 1871, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th March.
