John Milsom (1799 – 1869)

John was born circa 1799 at Yattendon. He married Margaret Hughes on 8 August 1824 at St Mary in Thatcham. Margaret was born 18 October 1800 at Crookham and baptized 23 November 1800 at St Mary in Thatcham (her brother Charles was buried at Newtown Road. Cemetery on 11 April 1872)

Margaret died March 1829 while living at Crookham and she was buried on 8 March 1829 at St Mary in Thatcham.

John remarried on 25 December 1849 at St Nicolas in Newbury to Maria Duck. Maria was born 20 September 1802 probably in Henwick and baptized 26 September 1802 at St Mary in Thatcham. John was recorded as a coal merchant in the marriage records.

In the 1841 census both John & Maria were recorded living in Northbrook Street Newbury with John recorded as a labourer and Maria as a servant. In the 1851 census John & Maria were living in Does Buildings in Northbrook Street in Newbury. John was recorded as a coal merchant. Maria's birthplace was recorded as Henwick. In the 1861 census John and Maria were still living in Does Buildings in Northbrook Street with John still a coal merchant. Maria's birthplace was recorded as Thatcham.

John died 9 December 1869 aged 70 while living at King John's Almhouses and he was buried 15 December 1869 at Newtown Road Cemetery after a service at St John the Evangelist in Newbury. He left a will and probate was granted on 7 February 1870 at Oxford to William Knight, canal agent on Newbury, and Henry Millson the Younger of Caversham. The value of the estate was under £600.

In the 1871 census Maria was probably living at Webbs Yard, Northbrook Street in Newbury although her place of birth was recorded as Calne in Wiltshire.

Maria died 14 November 1877 aged 75 and was buried 19 November 1877 at Newtown Road Cemetery after a service at St Nicolas in Newbury. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 15 November as below.

MILLSON – Nov. 14, at her residence, Northbrook Street, Newbury, Maria, widow of the late John Millson, aged 75 years.
