Eleanor Brazier

Eleanor, her parents, siblings and early life:
Eleanor (aka Ellen) was born in Cold Ash, Berkshire the daughter of William and Sarah Ann Knott (nee Bosley) who were married in 1859 (marriage registered in Newbury).
Her father William was baptised on the 17th January 1830 at St Mary Bucklebury, Berkshire, the son of John (a Shoemaker) and Mary Knott (nee Long) who were married on the 9th January 1830 at St Mary Bucklebury.
Her mother Sarah Ann was born 1840 in Kingsclere the daughter of John and Elizabeth Bosley (nee Garrard/Garrett) who were married on the 7th June 1829 at St Mary’s Church Thathcam.

In 1861 Eleanor’s parents were living in Furze Hill, Speen. William was recorded as a Labouring Woodman.
The 1871 census records Eleanor (3) living in a cottage in Cold Ash with her father William (42), a Farm Labourer, her mother Sarah (30) and her sister Mary Elizabeth (7).
In 1881 Eleanor (13), her father William (51) a General Labourer, her mother Sarah (41) and her siblings Mary (17) a Paper Mill Hand, Lizzie (7) and William (3) were again recorded living in Cold Ash.
Eleanor’s parents continued to live in Cold Ash until at least 1897. William died aged 67 in 1897, he was buried on the 18th January at St Mark’s Cold Ash. Sarah Ann died aged 60 in 1900, she was buried on the 19th September at St Mary the Virgin Speen.
Eleanor in later life:
In 1891 Eleanor (24) was recorded as a visitor at the home of Alfred (33) a Bricklayer and Louisa Brazier (35) and their children Alfred (11) and Mabel (8), in Montague Terrace, Newbury. Louisa was recorded as a Lunatic in this census. (By 1901 Louisa Brazier was a patient in the Moulsford Lunatic Asylum in Cholsey Berkshire).
Eleanor had the following three illegitimate children:

The 1901 census records Ellen Knott (33) as a Housekeeper living in Pound Street, Newbury with Alfred Brazier and his children Alfred (19), a Carpenter, Mabel (18) and Willie (16). Also recorded in the household (as visitors) were Ellen’s three children.
The 1911 census records Alfred (54), his “wife” Ellen (40) and their children Dorothy, (18), Reginald (16) and Norah (15) living in Pound Street, Newbury. (This census records that Alfred had been married for 20 years and had 3 children. These three children were the Knott children recorded in the 1901 census as visitors, all of their births were registered with the surname Knott with no mother’s maiden name recorded).
Alfred’s wife Louisa died aged 64 in 1919 (death registered in Wallingford) and Alfred married Eleanor Knott the following year (marriage registered in Spalding Lincolnshire)
Alfred died aged 74 on the 15th May 1931, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th May.
Eleanor died aged 71 on the 19th March 1939, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd March with her husband Alfred.
