Bertha, her parents, siblings and early life:

Bertha was born at Penclose Farm, Winterbourne, Berkshire the daughter of Francis Edward and Alice Mary Frampton (nee Hunt) who were married in 1873 (marriage registered in Newbury).

Bertha’s siblings were:

John Jenner born 1873 in Crux Easton

Frank Edward born c1875 in Crux Easton

Edith born 1876 in Crux Easton

A male child born and died in 1879 in Crux Easton without being given a name

Alice Rosa born 1880 at Penclose Farm, Winterbourne

Cecil Hunt born 1882 at Penclose Farm Winterbourne

 

In 1881 her father Francis was recorded as a Farmer (360 acres) living at Penclose Farm, Winterbourne with his family.

By 1891 the family were living at 21 Craven Street, Newbury.

Francis died aged 58 on the 24th March 1891, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th April.

Alice (50) and her children Alice Rose (20) (recorded as Rosie), Cecil (18) and Bertha (15), were still living at 21 Craven Street in 1901.

The 1911 census records Alice (63), living on her own means at Burlington, Andover Road, Newbury. Also living with her were her daughters, Bertha (25), Rosie Adey (30), her so-in-law Raymond Adey (35), her grandchildren Beryl Adey (6), Francis Adey (3) and a Servant.

Her mother died aged 77 on the 5th September 1923, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th September.

Bertha later in life:

Bertha married Alexander Gordon Leggatt in 1919 (marriage registered in Newbury).

(Alexander was born on the 12th August 1880 in Glasgow Lanarkshire and was a Medical Practitioner. In 1911 he was working in a Hospital in Ecclesall, Yorkshire).

 

They had a daughter born in 1920 and a son born in 1925.

In 1921 Bertha, Alexander, their daughter aged 1, and Alice Frampton (Bertha’s mother) were living at Burlington, Andover Road, Newbury.

 

Bertha died on the 12th November 1925, soon after giving birth to her son, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th November. (Age at death recorded as 37)

Alexander remarried in 1927, his 2nd wife was Eleanor Mary Binns (marriage registered in Woolwich)

Eleanor died on the 27th February 1949 in the Newbury District Hospital.

Alexander died on the 8th August 1949 at Hobson-street Private Hospital, Wellington New Zealand. A memorial service was held at St Nicolas Church Newbury on Saturday the 13th August.
