According to the 1851 census Thomas was born in Wiltshire. He married Elizabeth Pearce on the 21st October 1827 at St Mary Thatcham (surname spelt Colestone).

Thomas and Elizabeth had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

George Colstone baptised 2nd March 1828                    father recorded as a Labourer

Lucy Ann Colston baptised 16th August 1829                 father recorded as a Labourer

Mary Jane Coulstone baptised 25th December 1831    father recorded as a Labourer

Elizabeth Colston baptised 18th May 1834                     father recorded as a Cordwainer

Susan Hannah Coleston baptised 3rd July 1836             father recorded as a Shoemaker

William Coulston baptised 12th November 1837          father recorded as a Shoemaker

Sarah born c1839 (no birth or baptism found yet!)

 

Their son George died aged 6 months in 1828, he was buried (as George Coster) on the 20th August at St Mary the Virgin, Speen.

The 1841 census records Thomas (45), as a Shoemaker, living in Mary Hill, Newbury with his wife Elizabeth (30) and their children Lucy (12), Mary (9), Elizabeth (7), Susan (5), William (4) and Sarah (2). (Family surname recorded as Carter on ancestry).

Elizabeth died aged 33 in 1841, she was buried on the 3rd January 1842 at St Nicolas Newbury. (Surname recorded as Coster). Their daughter Susan (recorded as Susanna Coster) died aged 5 later that year, she was buried on the 24th November at St Nicolas Newbury.

The 1851 census records Thomas (59) as a List Shoemaker living in Bradley Yard, Mary Hill, Newbury with his children Lucy (20), a Milliner, Mary (18), a Shoe Binder, Elizabeth (14), a Servant, William (12), an Apprentice and Sarah (10). (Surname recorded as Coster).

 

Thomas died aged 70 on the 25th September 1859, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th September.
