According to the 1851 and 1861 census records Maria was born in Newbury Berkshire.

Possible marriage: 27th July 1818 at St Nicolas Church Newbury Benjamin Brown and Maria Patrick (both single).

(Benjamin Brown was born in Newbury c1784. In the 1815 census of Newbury Benjamin was recorded lodging with a Thomas Brown (36), a Carpenter, his wife Elizabeth (27) and their children Thomas (8) and William, an infant, on the west side of Cheap Street, Newbury. He was recorded as “Was a Sailor”. He served in the Navy from May 1803-August 1814).

Benjamin and Maria had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury (all baptisms record Benjamin as a Labourer):

Elizabeth 1st October 1820

William 13th October 1822 (died aged 8 months, buried 30th April 1823 at St Nicolas Newbury)

Eliza 13TH June 1824

Benjamin 10th December 1826 (died aged 3 in 1829, buried 8th July at St Nicolas Newbury)

Sophia 3rd January 1830 (died aged 2+, buried 4th April 1832 at St Nicolas Newbury)

Sophy 30th June 1833

Mary Ann 1st May 1836 (died aged 1+ in 1838, buried 22nd October 1838 at St Nicolas Newbury)

Thomas 5th April 1840

In 1841 Benjamin (60) was recorded as an Agricultural Labourer living in Cooper’s Yard, Newbury with Maria (45), Elizabeth (20), Eliza (15), Sophia (7) (Sophy) and Thomas (1).

The 1851 census records Maria (60) as a Greenwich Pensioner, living in Robeson’s Yard, Newbury with her children Eliza (21), Sophia (17) (Sophy), Thomas (11) and a lodger, Elijah Wornham (25) (her future son-in-law). Her daughter Elizabeth (30) was recorded in the above household.

The 1851 census records Maria’s husband Benjamin as a Private Pensioner in the Greenwich Hospital in Greenwich Kent. He died the following year and was buried on the 28th May 1852 in Greenwich.

The 1861 census records Maria(h) (77) as being bedridden, living in Mayors Lane, Cheap Street, Newbury with her married daughter Eliza Wornham (Wernham) (34) her son-in-law Elijah (37), her grandchildren Mariah (5) and Dorcas (2) and her son Thomas (20).

Maria died aged 77 in 1861 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th November
