JAMES LEGG 1852- 1906.
James was born in the 4th qrt. of 1851 and baptised on 16th January 1852 in Lambourn. The 1871 census identifies James in Padworth working as a Labourer.

James married Emma Sophia Howes who was born in 1861 at Greenhorn, near Newbury in Berkshire. the daughter ofJohn and Elizabeth Howes. Their marriage took place on 26th September 1885 at the church of St John the Evangelist in Newbury. James's profession was entered as a Blacksmith.


Some 6 years later the 1891 census shows that James was in the one employment as a Blacksmith's labourer and the family were living at Harrison Buildings in Greenham.

In the 1901 census James is employed as a Railway Blacksmiths Striker and they were now live at no 6 New Square in the parish of St Nicholas. Newbury.
James died in January in the Newbury District Hospital and was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery. Newbury on 13th January 1906.

His youngest daughter Louisa Kate is also buried in the cemetery.


Sometime after James death Sophia moved to London and in the 1911census she is living at 22 Glamorgan Street in Pimlico with 2 children Annie and Herbert Edwin and is working as a Charwoman.


As a widow of only 50 years Sophia Emma married again.as a marriage for an "Emma Legg" and a John Davies took place in Islington in the 1st Qtr of 1912.  This record has been verified as correct by Keith Legg. the son of Herbert. All of the children appeared to have settled in London apart from Keith who now lives in Tadley near Basingstoke, Hampshire.
