Richard Scriven

1839-1911

Richard was a Carpenter. He was baptised on the 23^rd June 1839 in Thatcham Berkshire, the son of Robert and Ann Scriven (nee Bunce) who were married on the 13^th September 1836 at St George, Hanover Square, London. Robert and Ann also had another son George born in 1837, baptised on the 10^th September 1837 in Thatcham.

Robert was a widower when he married Ann. His 1^st wife was Sarah Bunce, they were married on the 22^nd May 1828 at St Mary’s Church Thatcham. They had the following children baptised in Thatcham: Mary Ann 27^th December 1829

John 21^st September 1834

In 1841 Richard (2) was recorded living with his parents Robert (40), a Farmer and Ann (30), and his brother George (3) in Broad Street, Thatcham.

His mother died aged 34 in 1842, she was buried on the 20^th July at St Mary’s Thatcham.                    

His brother George died aged 5 two months later, he was buried on the 14^th September at St Mary’s Thatcham.

His father married for the 3^rd time on the 1^st March 1847 in Thatcham. His new wife was Mary Machin.

The 1851 census records Richard (11) living in Broad Street, Thatcham with his father, a Landed Proprietor, his step-mother Mary (41) and his half-sister Mary Ann (21).

The 1881, 1891 and 1901 census records record Richard living in Turnfield Thatcham. In 1881 and 1891 he was recorded as a Carpenter and in 1901 he was recorded “Living On “Own Means”

The 1911 census records him aged 72, as an inmate in the Newbury Workhouse his occupation was recorded as Formerly a Carpenter.

Richard died in the Workhouse in 1911 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5^th June. (age at death recorded as 68)
