James Girdler
1886-1889
James was born in Newbury the son of Charles and Sarah Girdler (nee Piper) who married in Newbury in 1869. His father was a widower with a daughter Mary Ann aged 5, when he married his mother. (1st wife Charlotte Curtis, married 1861, widowed 1867)
Charles and Sarah also had the following children:
Rose Emma born 1873 (later known as Rosina, died aged 17 months in 1874, buried on the 20th July in the Newtown Road Cemetery)

James’s father was recorded as a Paper Mill Labourer in 1861, a Brewer’s Labourer in 1871 and a Labourer in 1881.
The 1871 census records the family living in Borough Court, Newbury in 1881 they were recorded living in Lisle Court, Newbury.
James died aged 3 on the 30th May 1889 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd June.
James’s father died aged 50 in 1890 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th July.
In 1891 his mother and siblings were living in Falkland Place, Cheap Street, Newbury, his mother was working as a Charwoman.
Sarah remarried in 1894 her 2nd husband was Joseph Hunt, a widower. By 1901 they were living at 618 Oxford Road Reading and in 1911 they were living at 53 Cranbury Road Reading.
