Charles Girdler

c1840-1890

Charles was born in either Bucklebury or Thatcham Berkshire the son of George and Mary Girdler (nee Owens) who were married on the 15^th November 1827 in Kingsclere Hampshire.

His father George was an Agricultural Labourer, he was baptised on the 24^th March 1805 in Kingsclere Hampshire the son of William and Hannah Girdler (nee Chandler) who were married on the 13^th December 1795 in Kingsclere. He died aged 89 in 1891 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31^st January.

His mother Mary was baptised on the 2^nd February 1803 in Kingsclere Hampshire the daughter of John and Ann Owens (nee Benwell) who were married on the 16^th March 1792 in Kingsclere. She died aged 75 in 1876 and was buried on the 25^th September in Thatcham Berkshire.

Caroline baptised 28^th August 1836 in Bucklebury (died aged 18 months buried 24^th December 1837 in Bucklebury)

In 1851 Charles (10) was living in Crown Street Thatcham with his parents George (45) and Mary (50) (surname recorded as Gurdler on ancestry)

In 1861 Charles (20), a Paper Mill Labourer was living in Colthrop Cottage Thatcham with his parents.

Charles married Charlotte Curtis in 1861 (Charlotte was baptised on the 25^th June 1843 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the daughter of Adam and Sarah Curtis (nee Danvers) who were married on the 5^th October 1834 at St Nicolas Newbury).

Charlotte had a daughter Sarah Ann born before she married Charles. Sarah Ann was baptised on the 16^th August 1861, no fathers name was recorded on the baptism record. Sarah Ann died aged 5 months she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8^th November.

Charles and Charlotte had the following three children:

A daughter born 1862 (no name recorded at time of birth registration in the June quarter) who died soon after birth, she was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6^th June (buried as infant child of Charles Girdler).

Mary Ann Girdler born 1864

Charles James born 1866 died in 1867 (death was registered as Charles Girdler aged 0 in the March quarter) he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30^th March 1867 as Charles Girdler.

Charlotte died aged 23 in 1867 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21^st February

Charles remarried in 1869 his 2^nd wife was Sarah Piper

Rose Emma born 1873 (baptised as Rosina on the 13^th March 1873, died aged 17 months in 1874 (as Rosina) buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th July).

In 1871 Charles was working as a Brewer’s Labourer and was living in Borough Court, Newbury with Sarah and his daughter Mary Ann (6).

The 1881 census records the family were living at 7 Lisle Court Newbury. Charles was recorded as a Labourer.

Charles died aged 50 in 1890 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th July.

In 1891 Sarah and her children were living in Falkland Place, Cheap Street, Newbury, Sarah was working as a Charwoman.

Sarah remarried in 1894 her 2^nd husband was Joseph Hunt, a widower. By 1901 they were living at 618 Oxford Road Reading and in 1911 they were living at 53 Cranbury Road Reading.
