Ann Curtis

c1828-1865

Ann Hussey was born c1828 in Sydmonton Hampshire the daughter of William and Sarah Hussey (nee Smith) who were married in Faccombe Hampshire on the 7^th April 1806. William was born in Beenham Berkshire c1783 and was an Agricultural Labourer. Sarah was born c 1785 in Bourne Hampshire.

In 1841 Ann (13) was living in Sydmonton with her parents William (65) and Sarah (55).

On the 24^thFebruary 1842 at the County Assizes Southampton Ann (14) was convicted of house breaking and was sentenced to 1 month imprisonment.

In 1849 she gave birth to an illegitimate son, Alfred, his birth was registered as Alfred Curtis mother’s maiden name Hussey. In 1851 she married Israel Curtis in Kingsclere.  

The 1851 census records Israel working as a Blacksmith. Ann, Alfred and Israel were living with Israel’s parents Adam and Hannah and his brother Isaac in Back Lane Newbury.

 Ann gave birth to four more children Matilda born in 1853, Edward born in 1857 Charles born in 1859 and Henry William born in 1861 (It’s possible that she also had a daughter Caroline born c1851 as the 1861 census records this child although there is no birth registration for her).

Their daughter Matilda died aged 2 in 1856 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9^th May

In 1861 the family were living in Eyles Yard Bartholomew Street.  Israel was working as a Marine Store Dealer.

Israel died aged 32 in 1862 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5^th May.

Ann died aged 36 in 1865 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11^th November.
