Emma was born in Australia in 1841 (birth registered in Pitt Street, Sydney, New South Wales) the daughter of Samuel Thomas and Harriet Matilda Bevan (nee Hone) who were married on the 3rd February 1840 in Parramatta, Cumberland, New South Wales.

 Samuel and Harriet also had at least two other children, Eliza, born in 1846 and Ann born in 1847 (Ann died soon after birth), both girls were born in Bethnal Green London.

 The 1851 census records Harriet (39) as a married woman working as a General Shop Keeper, living at 26 William Street, Bethnal Green with Emma (9) and Eliza (4). (no record of Samuel found)

 By 1861 Harriet was living at 32 Morpeth Street, Bethnal Green with a Henry Kenning, a Master Cooper (as his wife, no marriage found) and her children Ema (19) and Eliza (15).

 The 1871 census records Emma (29) and her sister Eliza (24) living at 42 Forest Street, West Ham, Essex, both girls occupations were recorded as “Fancy Business”. Their mother was recorded as Harriet Kenning, a widow, she was still living at 32 Morpeth Street, Bethnal Green. (Henry Kenning died aged 63 in 1863)

 The 1881 census records both girls living with their mother in Morpeth Street. Emma (39) was recorded as a Bible Woman  (illegible word) Reader and Eliza (34) was recorded as a Nurse.

 The 1891 census records Harriet (81), Emma (49) and Eliza (44) living at 146 Queens Road, St Andrew, Sussex. Both girls were recorded as Nurses.

 By 1901 Emma (59) and Eliza (54) were living on their “Own Means” in Newbury (6 Craven Street).

 The 1911 census records both girls living on “Private Means” at 3 West Street, Newbury.

 By 1918 they had moved to 2 Bartholomew Cottages Newbury.

 Eliza died aged 74 in 1920, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th November.

 Emma continued to live in Bartholomew Cottages until 1924. She was recorded in the 1925 Electoral Registers living at 1 Old Newtown Road Newbury.

 She continued to live at 1 Old Newtown Road until her death in 1929. She died aged 88 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th May.
