Hannah Barrett

 Hannah, her family and early life:

Hannah King was born in Newbury she was baptised on the 10^th March 1816 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of David and Hannah King (nee Durling) who were married on the 17^th June 1802 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

 Hannah’s father David was born c1779 in Newbury the son of John and Hannah King. He died aged 58 in 1836 and was buried on the 12^th September at St Nicolas Newbury.

Her mother Hannah was born c1776 in Newbury the daughter of William and Ann Durling. She died aged 64 in 1839 and was buried on the 24^th August at St Nicolas Newbury.

Other known children of David and Hannah were: (all baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury)

Thomas born 23^rd April 1803, baptised 24^th April 1803 (died 1803 buried 3^rd May at St Nicolas Newbury)

Maria born 2^nd May 1804, baptised 27^th May 1804

Charles born 3^rd July 1805, baptised 14^th July 1805

George born 9^th February 1807, baptised 1^st March 1807

Thomas born 30^th May 1808, baptised 8^th June 1808

Amelia born 15^th March 1812, baptised 12^th April 1812

Alfred born c1818, baptised 15^th November 1818

In 1815 David (35), a Malster, Hannah (37), and their children Maria (12), Charles (10), George (8), Thomas (6), Amelia (3) and a William Church (1) were living on the east side of the Wash Newbury. Living next door was David’s widowed mother Hannah King aged 80, his widowed sister Mary Harvey aged 38 and his niece Sarah Harvey aged 15.

David’s mother died aged 80 in 1816 she was buried on the 7^th December at St Nicolas Newbury

Hannah:

Hannah had the following four illegitimate children:

Ellen Wells born in 1840, baptised on the 24^th January 1841

John William Wells born in 1846, baptised on the 25^th October 1846

Isabella Wells born in 1849, baptised on the 29^th April 1849 (died aged 7 in 1856, buried 29^th March a St Nicolas Newbury)

Charles King born in 1851, baptised on the 26^th October 1851

(The first three children’s births were registered with the surname Wells, mother’s maiden name King, Charles birth was registered with the surname King. No father was recorded on any of the baptism records and all four children were recorded with the surname King).

In the 1841 census Hannah was recorded as Ann King aged 25, living at the Wash, Newbury with a George Wills (Wells) aged 50 and her daughter Ellen King aged 5 months.

The 1851 census records Hannah as Hannah Wells (39) wife of (no marriage found) George Wells (63, born in Maidstone Kent), a Chelsea Pensioner/Brewer’s Labourer and their children, Ellen Wells (11), John Wm Wells (5) and Isabella Wells (2) living in Bartholomew Street Newbury.

Hannah King married John William Basenden in 1852 (marriage registered in Newbury).

The 1861 census records John (72), as a Greenwich Pensioner living with Hannah (42) and Hannah’s children, Ellen King (17), John King (14) and Charles King (8) in Lewis’s Buildings Bartholomew Street Newbury

John died aged 73 in 1862 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12^th February.

Hannah remarried in 1869 her 2^nd husband was a widower, James Barrett, a Bargeman (marriage registered in Newbury).

The 1871 census records Hannah (55) as a Bargeman’s wife (surname recorded as Banet on ancestry) and her son Charles Wells (23), a Grocer’s Porter, living in Pigeon’s Yard Newbury.

James died aged 64 on the 4^th August 1871, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9^th August.

In 1881 Hannah (65) was working as a Charwoman, she was living at 3 Rupert Place Newbury.

She died aged 72 in 1891 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9^th November
