 James was born c1828 in Newbury the son of James and Mary Allder (nee Preston) who were married in 1820 in Winterbourne Berkshire.

 His father James was born c1788 in Donnington Berkshire. He died aged 75 in 1863 and was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th January.

 His mother Mary was baptised (as Molly)  in 1790 at Shaw-cum-Donnington  Berkshire the daughter of William and Mary Preston. She died aged 80 in 1871 and was buried (as Molley) on the 31st March at St Andrew Boxford

 In 1841 James (12) was living at the Greyhound, Bartholomew Street, Newbury with his parents James (50), a Publican and Mary (50) and his siblings, Mary (20) and Henry (10).

 The 1851 census records James (23) as a Sawyer, he was still living with his parents at the Greyhound, also living in the household were his brothers, Ralph (27), a Journeyman Painter, Henry (21), a Journeyman Carpenter, his cousins, Frederick Preston (21), a Journeyman Millwright and Amelia Preston (16), a General Servant and two lodgers.

 James married Sarah Ann Thatcher in 1854 (marriage registered in Newbury).

 (Sarah was born c1835 in Donnington Berkshire the daughter of Thomas and Eliza Thatcher (nee Challis) who were married on the 22nd March 1828 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

 James and Sarah Ann had the following children: (all born in Newbury)

Henry 1856 (died aged 4 months in 1856, buried 15th August at St Mary the Virgin Speen)

George 1857 (died in 1857, buried 20th December at St Mary the Virgin Speen)

Elizabeth Ann 1859

Thomas 1861

Henry c1863

Mary Ann Eliza 1865

Twins: Rosa and Ralph 1871 (Rosa died in 1872, buried 23rd October in the Newtown Road Cemetery)

 The family were recorded living at 19 Waterloo Place, Newbury in 1861 and 1871 and Mill Lane, Bruton, Somerset in 1881.

 In 1891 Sarah and her son Ralph were living at 2 Siddib Cottages, Newbury. James was lodging in Salisbury Road, Savenake, Wiltshire.

 The 1901 census records James, Sarah and Ralph living at 2 Siddib Cottages, Newbury.

 Sarah died aged 64 in 1902, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th March

Sometime after Sarah’s death James moved to 12 Church Almshouses, Newbury. He died aged 69 in 1908 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th July.
