Thomas Wheeler
c1832-1889
Thomas, his parents, siblings and early life:
Thomas was baptised on the 29th July 1832 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of Thomas and Ann Wheeler (nee Collins) who were married on the 25th December 1818 in Speen Berkshire.
His father Thomas was a Blacksmith. He was baptised on the 27th December 1779 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the son of Edward and Ann Wheeler. He died aged 80 in 1856 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th July.
His mother Ann was born in Speen Berkshire, she was baptised on the 24th June 1787 the daughter of James and Ann(e) Collins (nee Harper) who were married in 1783 in Speen. Ann died aged 77 in 1864 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th April.
Thomas and Ann also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Newbury:
Edmund baptised 11th June 1820 (died aged 4 buried on the 26th June 1824 at St Nicolas Newbury)
Thomas baptised 1st December 1822 (died aged 2+ in 1825 buried 22nd July at St Nicolas Newbury)
William baptised 30th April 1824
Charles baptised 3rd June 1827
Eliza baptised 5th July 1829
Thomas was recorded as a Brush Maker in 1851 and 1871, a Shoemaker in 1861 and a Journeyman Brush Maker in 1881.
In 1841 Thomas (9) was living in Mary Hill Newbury with his parents Thomas (60) and Ann (50) and his siblings, William (15), Charles (15) and Eliza (12).
The 1851 census again records him living in Mary Hill with his parents.
Thomas:
Thomas married Emma Skinner in 1858 (Marriage registered in Newbury. Emma was born c1834 in Greenham the daughter of Samuel and Mary Skinner (nee Everett)
The 1861 census records Thomas (26) and Emma (25) living in Kennet Place Speen Berkshire.
Thomas and Emma had the following children:

In 1871 the family were living in Bartholomew Street Newbury.
In the 1881 census Thomas (48), Emma (46), Charles (19), a Bricklayer’s Labourer, Samuel (17) an Engine Fitter, Caroline (15), Thomas (13), Emma (11), Edward (9) and Eliza Kate (1) were recorded living in Marsh Road Newbury.
Thomas died aged 57 on the 12th October 1889 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th October.
In 1891 Emma (57) was living at 7 Charles Place Newbury, Her youngest four children were still living with her. By 1901 she was living with her married daughter Caroline and son-in-law John Quelch at 4 Sunny Bank Terrace King’s Road Newbury. She continued living with John and Caroline at Sunny Bank Terrace until her death. She died aged 83 on the 29th May 1917 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd June.
