Maria Carr was born c1832 in Clerkenwell Middlesex the daughter of John and Ann Carr (nee Plank) who were married on the 6th March 1831 at St Mary Islington Middlesex.

Maria’s father was a Sawyer he was baptised on the 29th July 1798 in Great Bedwyn Wiltshire the son of Richard and Martha Carr. Her mother was born c1812 she died aged 36 on the 4th May 1848 after giving birth to her son William.

John and Ann also had the following children:

Harriett baptised 20thAugust 1834 (died aged 4 months in 1835, buried 23rd October at St Nicolas Newbury)

Eliza c1836

Charles c1838 (died aged 4+ in 1842, buried 10th December at St Nicolas Newbury)

Jane c1841 (died aged 1 in 1842, buried 7th December at St Nicolas Newbury)

Ann c1844

William 1848 (died aged 9 months 1849, buried 24th February at St Nicolas Newbury)

 

In 1841 John (30), Ann (25), Maria (10), Eliza (5), Charles (3) and Jane (4 months) were living in the City Newbury.

In 1851 John (48) was recorded as a Journeyman Sawyer, lodging in Brown’s Yard Newbury. His daughter Ann (7) was boarding in Bartholomew’s Newbury with a Frances Sanner (53) a Schoolmistress. Eliza and Maria do not seem to be recorded in the 1851 census.

 In 1861 John (62), his daughter Ann (18) and his granddaughter Alice (1) were living at 33 Dartmoor Street Kensington Middlesex.

Henry was born c1821 in Shaftsbury Dorset

In 1861 Henry Dowling (40), a Hawker and Maria (29) were recorded living in Back Lane Newbury.

Henry died (death unknown) and Maria remarried in 1869

James was born c1826 in Turnham Green Middlesex

The 1871 census records James (42) as a General Dealer and Maria (40) living in New Street Andover Hampshire. (Surname recorded as Walsey on ancestry). In the 1881 census James Wasley (55) was recorded as a Costermonger,  living in the High Street Andover with Maria (54) and two visitors, Charles Bull (25) an Assistant Costermonger and Christina Bull (14)

Maria died aged 50 on the 17th January 1882 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st January.
