John Warner

c1789-1878

John, his parents and early life:

John was born in Marlborough Wiltshire he was baptised on the 8^th November 1789 at St Mary the Virgin Marlborough the son of John and Phoebe Warner (nee Painter) who were married on the 27^th April 1789 at St Mary the Virgin Marlborough Wiltshire (John was from the parish of St Andrew Ogbourne Marlborough Wiltshire). John and Phoebe also had a son Thomas, baptised on the 26^th June 1791 at St Andrew Ogbourne Marlborough.

John’s father was born c1758 in Froxfield Wiltshire he died aged 94 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9^th January 1852.

His mother Phoebe was baptised on the 14^th July 1751 at Chilton Foliat Wiltshire, the daughter of William and Ann Painter. She died aged 61 in 1813, she was buried on the 1^st March at Chilton Foliat (burial record records her abode as Newbury).

His father remarried in 1814, his 2^nd wife was a widow, Hannah Field they were married on the 7^thJuly at St Nicolas Church Newbury

The 1815 census of Newbury records his father John (56), his stepmother Hannah (46) and Hannah’s daughter Sarah Field (17), living at East Field, Newbury.

In 1841 John (80) and Hannah (60) were living in Bagnor, Speen Newbury.

John’s father was widowed again in 1847. Hannah died aged 72 she was buried on the 25^th May 1847 at St Mary the Virgin Speen Berkshire.

John in later life:

John was a Sawyer he married his step-sister Diannah Field in Reading Berkshire in 1816. (Diannah was recorded as Hannah at the time of her marriage. Diannah was baptised on the 24^th February 1796 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the daughter of John and Diannah Field (nee Winter) who were married on the 26^th December 1793. Diannah was recorded as Hannah when she married John Field in 1793).

John and Diannah/Hannah Warner had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

Eliza baptised 5^th September 1817 (mum recorded as Hannah)

Phoebe baptised 1^st December 1819 (mum recorded as Hannah)

John baptised 10^th April 1822 (mum recorded as Hannah)

Susanna baptised 1^st August 1824 (mum recorded as Hannah)

Thomas baptised 11^th June 1826 (mum recorded as Dianna)

Alfred baptised 18^th May 1828 (mum recorded as Dianna)

Sarah born c1831

Sophia baptised 15^th May 1833 (mum recorded as Dianna)

Jemima baptised 14^th February 1836 (mum recorded as Dianna)

Elijah born 1839

In 1841 John (56) was recorded living in East Field Newbury with Deannah (45) and their children, John (19), a Boat Builder, Susannah (15), Thomas (15), Alfred (13), Sarah (10), Sophia (8), Jemima (5) and Elijah (2).

The 1851 census records John (61), Dianna (54), Sarah (20), a Dressmaker, Sophia Ann (18), Elijah (11) and John’s father John (93), a Carpenter, living in Back Lane Newbury

Diannah died aged 64 in 1859 she was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the on the 8^th July.

Both the 1861 and 1871 census records record John living alone in Church Almshouses Newbury.

He died aged 90 on the 22^nd July 1878 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27^th July
