Joseph was born in Newbury, the son of John and Livinia Wright (nee Challis) who were married in Newbury in 1848.

 

His mother Livinia was baptised in Newbury in 1827, the daughter of Frederick and Martha Challis (nee Walter) who were married on the 11th November 1821 in Speen.

 

His father John was baptised on the 15th December 1822 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Wright (nee Triggs) who were married on the 25th May 1817 at St Nicolas)

 

Joseph’s siblings were:

Twins: Jane and Richard John 1849 (Richard died aged 9 weeks, buried 6th June 1849 at St Nicolas Newbury)

Richard c1851

Female c1855 (died without being given a name soon after birth)

Annie Maria 1856 (died aged 3, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery Newbury on the 24th April 1860 )

The 1851 census records Livinia (24) (name recorded as Leonia on ancestry) living with her mother-in-law Elizabeth Wright (60) a Pauper/wife of a Coal Merchant’s Labourer and her children Jane (2) and Richard Wright (1 month) in Northcroft Lane Newbury.

 

In 1861 his parents were recorded living in West Mills Newbury with their children Richard (10) and Elizabeth (2). Livinia (31) was recorded as a Shoe Binder, and John (37) was recorded as a Bargeman.

 

His father died aged 46 in 1869, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd October.

 

In 1871 Joseph (4), his sisters Elizabeth (10),  Annie Livinia (8) and his brother John (7) (Frederick John) were recorded as inmates in the Newbury Workhouse.

 

His mother remarried in 1874, her 2nd husband was Henry Waite.

 

In 1881 Joseph (14) was working as a Bricklayer’s Labourer, he was living with his mother who was working as a Laundress and his sisters Annie (18) a Housemaid and his niece Alice Wright (3), in Mayor’s Lane Newbury.

 

Joseph married Elizabeth Liddiard (nee Winkworth, a widow with four children) in 1889. They had the following three children:

Frederick John born 1899

Beatrice Elizabeth born c1893

Stanley Frank born 1899

 

In both the 1891 and 1901 census records Joseph was recorded as a Bricklayer’s Labourer. In 1911 he was recorded as a Wine Merchant’s Porter.

 

In 1891 the family were recorded living in Union Court, Newbury. In the 1901 and 1911 census records they were recorded living in York Road, Newbury. They continued to live in York Road until their deaths.

 

Elizabeth died aged 80 on the 10th April 1935, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th April.

 

Joseph died aged 88 on the 3rd July 1956, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th July.
