Richard Wright

Richard, his parents, siblings and early life:

Richard was born in Newbury he was baptised on the 25^th February 1787 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the son of John and Sarah Wright (nee Brunsdon) who were married on the 13^th November 1780 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

John and Sarah also had the following 14 children:

John Brunsdon baptised 8^th July 1781 (buried (as John) 9^th October 1815 at St Nicolas)

William baptised 2^nd March 1783 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (buried 1^st March 1788 at St Nicolas)

James born c1784

William and Sarah both baptised 22^nd June 1788 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (Sarah buried 11/8/1788, William buried 31/8/1789 at St Nicolas)

Charles baptised 1^st November 1789 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (buried 15^th May 1832 at St Nicolas)

Hannah baptised 21^st August 1791 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (married Sidney Cumner in 1814, buried 12^th September 1836 at St Nicolas)

Thomas baptised 14^th July 1793 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (buried 16^th March 1829 at St Nicolas)

Betsy baptised 20^th September 1795 at St Nicolas Church Newbury

Joseph born 6^th March 1797 baptised 2^nd April 1797 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (married Maria Walker in 1829, buried 30^th December 1857 in the NRC)

Elizabeth born 28^th July1798 baptised 15^th August 1798 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (married James Hatt in 1833, buried 3^rd December 1879 in the NRC)

Samuel baptised 5^th January 1800 (buried 23^rd September 1807 at St Nicolas)

Sarah born 28^th August 1802 baptised 26^th September 1802 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (married widower George Field in 1850, died aged 48 in 1851 buried in the NRC on the 27^th June)

Mary born c1805 baptised 23^rd August 1805 (buried 10^th March 1806 at St Nicolas Church Newbury)

The 1815 census of Newbury records Richard (27), living in Northcroft Lane (on the west side of Northbrook Street) Newbury with his parents John (60), a Malter and Sarah (54) and his siblings John (33), James (31) and Sarah (13).

Richard’s father died aged 71 in 1825 he was buried on the 7^th September at St Nicolas Newbury. His mother Sarah died aged 100 on the 29^th March 1852 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2^nd April.

Richard:

Richard married Elizabeth Triggs on the 25^th May 1817 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (Elizabeth was baptised on the 13^th May 1791 at St Nicolas Newbury the daughter of Richard and Jane Triggs (nee Kember) who were married on the 28^th May 1787 at St Nicolas Newbury).

In 1815 Elizabeth Triggs (20) was also living in Northcroft Lane Newbury with her brothers John Triggs (10) and Richard Triggs 16, a Basket Maker.

Richard and Elizabeth had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

Ann baptised 12^th April 1818

Jane baptised 3^rd September 1820

John baptised 15^th December 1822

Richard baptised 17^th July 1825

Charles baptised 25^th November 1827

Sarah baptised 14^th February 1830

Elizabeth baptised 12^th May 1833 (died aged 5 months, buried 24^th September at St Nicolas Newbury)

Eliza baptised 21^st September 1834 (died aged 1,buried 21^st August 1835 at St Nicolas Newbury)

(Richard was recorded as a Tanner on Ann’s baptism record in 1818 and a Labourer on all of the other baptism records)

The 1841 census records Richard (50), as a Labourer, living in Northcroft Lane Newbury with Elizabeth (50) and their children Charles (13) and Sarah (10).

Richard died aged 63 in 1850 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2^nd August.

The 1851 census records Elizabeth (60) as a Pauper/wife of a Coal Merchant’s Labourer living in Northcroft Lane, also living with her were Livinia (recorded as Leonia) Wright (24), Jane Wright (2) and Richard Wright (1 month) (Livinia married Richard and Elizabeth’s son John Wright born c1823, in 1848)

Elizabeth died aged 77 in 1867 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15^th February.
