Richard Wright

1825-1881

Richard was baptised on the 17^th July 1825 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Wright (nee Triggs) who were married on the 25^th May 1817 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

His father Richard was born in Newbury, he was baptised on the 25^th February 1787 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of John and Sarah Wright (nee Brunsdon) who were married on the 13^th November 1780 at St Nicolas Church Newbury..

His mother Elizabeth was baptised on the 13^th May 1791 at St Nicolas Newbury, the daughter of Richard and Jane Triggs (nee Kember) who were married on the 28^th May 1787 at St Nicolas Newbury.

Richard and Elizabeth also had the following children:

Ann baptised 12^th April 1818

Jane baptised 3^rd September 1820

John baptised 15^th December 1822

Charles baptised 25^th November 1827

Sarah baptised 14^th February 1830

Elizabeth baptised 12^th May 1833 (died aged 5 months, buried 24^th September at St Nicolas Newbury)

Eliza baptised 21^st September 1834 (died aged 1,buried 21^st August 1835 at St Nicolas Newbury)

(Richard was recorded as a Tanner on Ann’s baptism record in 1818 and a Labourer on all of the other baptism records)

In 1841 Richard (15) was recorded as a Male Servant, he was living in Church Court, Newbury with his uncle, Joseph Wright (35) a Hairdresser, his aunt, Maria Wright (35) and his cousin, Maria Cumner (10), a female Servant.

In 1851 Richard (24) was working as a Labourer, he was living in Broad Street Reading Berkshire.

The 1861 census records him aged 35, working as a Butcher’s Assistant in the High Street Odiham Hampshire.

By 1871 Richard was working as a Journeyman Butcher. The census for that year records him as an Inmate in the Workhouse Newbury.

He died aged 57 on the 11^th January 1881 in the Workhouse and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15^th January.
