JOHN HALL

c1788 - 1866

John was born in Newbury and was a Bricklayer/Builder, he married Hannah Head on the 23`d July 1808 at St Nicolas Church Newbury and they had the following children:

Maria c1809

Hannah c1810

Eliza c1812

Ann c1813 (died aged 11 buried March 1824 at St Nicolas Newbury)

Charles c1814 (died aged 2 buried 21s1 June 1816 at St Nicolas Newbury)

Charles c1823

Mary c1825

Robert 1827 (died aged 11 days buried with his mother Hannah on the 29th January 1827)


The 1815 census of Newbury records John (28), Bricklayer, Hannah (29), Maria (6), Hannah (5), Eliza (3), Ann (2) and Charles (1) living in Perris's Yard (East side of Northbrook Street) Newbury.
Hannah died aged 40 in 1827 just after giving birth to her son Robert who only lived for 11 days they were buried together on the 29th January at St Nicolas Newbury.

John remarried on the 7th May the same year at St Mary the Virgin Speen. His 2" wife, Ann Hyne

Ann died aged 27 in 1831 she was laid to rest on the 14th January at St Nicolas Newbury.

John married again less than four months later. His 3rd wife was Winifred Walter the marriage took place on the 5th May at St Nicolas Church Newbury. John and Winifred had the following children:

Adolphus born c1836

Winifred died aged 26 in 1837 she was laid to rest (as Winifred Amelia) on the 6th February at St Nicolas Newbury.


John married his 4th wife, Ann Vince on the 6th June 1838 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Ann died aged 24, seven months later she was buried at St Nicolas Newbury on the 11th January 1839.

By 1841 John had married for the 5th time his new wife was also named Ann, (born in Greenham c1814). (Possible marriage Ann Spenser March Q 1840 Basingstoke NOT PROVED)


The 1841 census records John (50), Bricklayer, Ann (28), Charles (15), Mary (15), James (9), Amelia (7) and Adolphus (5), living in Northcroft Lane Newbury.
The family were still living in Northcroft Lane Newbury in 1851. John (63) was recorded as a Builder employing 6 men, his son James (19), was recorded as a Bricklayer's Apprentice. Others family members recorded in the household were Ann (38), Amelia (16) and Adolphus (14).
By 1861 Ann (48) and John (74), recorded as a Builder employing 4 men, were living alone in the family home.
Ann died aged 48 in 1863 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th October

John died aged 78 on the 24th September 1866 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd October in a private grave.


Probate: Hall John Effects: under £800 18th October 1866 The Will of John Hall late of Newbury in the County of Berks Bricklayer deceased who died 24th September 1866 at Newbury aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oaths of Eliza Hall of Newbury aforesaid Spinster the Daughter and William Benwell Nalder of Newbury aforesaid Gentleman the Executors.


Berkshire Chronicle Dated 29th September 1866 September 24,

Mr J. Hall, of Northcroft Lane, Newbury, aged 78. The deceased had five wives, and died a widower.
