Eliza Chivers (1846-1924)

Born in Greenham , daughter of James and Hannah Greetham. Living at Greenham Lock on 1851 census, father was the lock keeper. By 1861 they had moved to Newbury living in Dibley's Yard Bartholomew Street. James canal lock keeper. On 1871 census still living at Dibley's Yard but mother now head of house hold and taking in laundry. Eliza married Frederick Chivers in 1881, who was a green grocer, when she was 35 yrs. In 1891 they lived on Bartholomew Street with a stepson Edward Greetham aged 15yr (? Illegitimate child of Eliza) and Frederick Chivers, on aged 5 yr.

Eliza was widowed by 1901 ,they were still at 106 Bartholomew Street. Eliza was now head of the household and described as a pork butcher shopkeeper. Edward was a grocer's assistant and Frederick a grocer's errand boy. By 1911 she was living with her son Frederick at the racecourse where he was foreman.

She died in 1924 while living at 10 York Road. Ref. findmypast
