Mr North was station master at Newbury for 21 years. He was so well known in the Town and District for his courteous and kindly manner, in a thousand and one ways. That it is not necessary for further praise. For a considerable time his health was very indifferent, doubtless caused by the long and anxious duties that fell to him in the re-construction of the splendid New Station, and the swift and heavy war work which also includes the gigantic business at the Racecourse. It was known to his personal friends the real grief he bore, by the total breakdown of his only son's health, and the fact that he had become a permanent invalid.

The Committee, whose names are given below, has been formed to raise a fund for his family, and to help to do for them what he, alas, can never do again.

COMMITTEE:- Adrian Hawker, Esq., Mayor of Newbury, Chairman; Alderman J. Rankin, Councillors J. Stradling and F. C. Hopson, Messrs E. P. Plenty, H. Dolton, E. Midwinter, E.J. Forster. Alderman J.N. Day, Hon Secretary. J. Brighton, Cheap Street, Newbury; William Brain, Market Street, Newbury, Joint Assistant Secretaries.
