William Clements was born circa 1797 in Newbury. He married Mary Gale on 3 September 1820 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Mary was born circa 1793 in Wiltshire. The exact location of Mary’s birth is unknown. In the 1851 census it appears to be Carlston and in 1861 as Staples Green but neither place seems to exist.

William and Mary were recorded in the 1841 census with children William aged circa 20, Sarah Ann and Charlotte both aged circa 15, Sophia aged 13, Joshua aged 11 and James aged 8 living in West Mills in Newbury. William senior was probably a fishmonger and his son William a cob maker.

In the 1851 census Mary and her sons Joshua and James were still living in in West Mills, both sons were shoemakers. William was probably living as a servant in Midgham with his occupation being a brewer.

Ten years later in the 1861 census William and Mary with granddaughter Elizabeth Clements aged 3 were still living in West Mills in Newbury. William was recorded as a leather draper.

William Clements died in March 1863 aged 65 and he was buried on 9 March 1863 at Newtown Road Cemetery.

In the 1871 census Mary and her granddaughter Elizabeth Clements now aged 13 were recorded at 4 St Mary’s Almhouses in Newbury. Mary was a seamstress.

Mary Clements died in June 1872 aged 65 and she was buried on 8 June 1872 at Newtown Road Cemetery. She was still living at St Mary’s as in the Berkshire Chronicle dated 8 June 1872 there was a notice of a vacancy caused by the decease of Mrs. Mary Clements.

Sarah Ann Willis, the daughter of William and Mary, was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 6 January 1860.
